I sold my km84 for a Gefell M300. I'm telling you, the difference was negligible. Never thought I would say that, either. M300 has a little more too, but I found myself adding top to the 84's with acoustics. drbill , where do you get km86's these days that isn't the ridiculous price that VK is asking? Another very satisfied Gefell M300 user here - lots of body but a beautiful sparkle up top as well. Definitely worth a look or a demo if you can.

We've got 2 M582's and I've just never been drawn to them. My order of favorites for acoustic music with what we have would be 54, 84, 56, 184, 582. I should really go back and mess with those 582's a bit more and see if I missed something. I haven't used them or tried them on anything in about 3 years or so.
The 56 is great on jazz upright bass.

I thought the 54s were a little bright too.

indiehouse said, "If they were priced just a tad lower, they might have more appeal, to me, anyways". I hear you.
The thing is, they're not making KM84's anymore, and although you can usually find some on eBay, who's to say what condition they're in. I think being able to buy a brand new mic and then be able to take care of it as you please has merit of its own, plus you get a warranty. Some people like buying something brand new and breaking it in their way, like a new car or a Martin guitar, and maybe the feeling is similar when you buy something at this level brand new.
It's likely this is what it has to cost to make a new mic that's every bit as well made and designed as the old ones were. So far, the promise of Chinese manufacturing bringing truly high end quality mics to people at low cost hasn't quite worked very well yet.

All my three KM84's started life as KM85's. Same body, different capsule. KM85's can often be found in much better condition and cheaper than KM84's. Then you need to be patient to find a KK84 capsule. Or if you can find a KM85 cheap enough just purchase a brand new capsule from Neumann.

Scored an ebay deal on a pair of Soyuz su-011s. They arrived today and I did a bit of toying around with them, after I finished building another ez1073. Sounds good so far.
I'll take them to the studio this week and shoot them out with our km184s and some borrowed km84s. Will post some files once we get it done.
Km84s are a love of mine for bluegrass.

I got a KM 84 off of eBay recently. It was advertised as perfect , it wasn't . Luckily the seller paid for Tom Onofrio to bring it to spec so I bought another one from him through PayPal .

Here is a simple test of my new hand-built 1073s with the pair of Soyuz Su-011 microphones that just arrived yesterday. Ain't no reason anyone can't make a record with this setup!

Smooove baby, smooove. Nice playing BGD! Thanks. Since your last comment, I just replaced the previous video with a new version with a new performance, less reverb, and no low frequency shelf. Let me know what you think.

Thanks to Colin (AML), Dan (Collective Cases), and Jeff (CAPI) for the components! Is that the case that comes with the aml kit? How much does the aml 1073 19" rack kit cost ? How easy is the build ? How experienced are you with soldering? I'm a noob I have made some cables like bnc, ts, trs, and xlr... do you have a vid of you building the 1073... inlike the gray face plate can it be blue? Can it say Neve on it? Obviously DIY is not for resale, aesthetic purposes, is why I am asking..

You buy the case separately. Dan from collectivecases.com offers the case you see in the video with the "N" logo. For all components (AML kit, case, Marconi knobs, Mouser parts) plus shipping it costs me $890.04 per preamp to build, and it seems to be taking me around 8 hours to build.

Nice demo. Just a question, I thought the original Soyuz SDC's were FET mics. The SU-11's are tubes. Didn't Soyuz initially release a FET SDC?

That is just gorgeous... the playing, the gear, most of all.. the feel. Just wonderful way to start my day, thank you. Those mics, and the preamps sound great!!! I can see why people like the soyuz... the top end is restrained just like a km84, in comparison to most SDCs of modern manufacture. cheers Wiz

BGD, still sounds great. The top end is there, just not scratching at your ears. I only like to HPF a little at 20-40 hz very carefully, because at very low frequencies there's noise, but there's also ambience. I don't want to cut that out completely, so a little dab'll do ya.
I used the 0-11's wit my Dizengoff D4, which is a little brighter than your preamp. It was still incredibly smooth in the highs, but it didn't sacrifice detail, just emphasize what's good up there.

I enjoyed both vids and I think the second vid is very good and reveals the guitar more. The Mics sound very nice and definitely has the beautiful hi end people expect from this style of mic... And they are tube based Still would invest in km84's over these OT: Does Aml not have a full kit to purchase like other DIY offerings like Munson and Fletcher and Hairball? I thought AML had cases; at $850 a channel it's still great price IMO even with having to build the kit... Line level and eq plus the pre..Does your AML have separate mic and line input transformers and separate line and mic I/O for permanent patching? Are the transformers Carnhill, and can you get different transformers or is the pcb fitted for the carnhill? ( if that's even how it's configured/ made) Sweetwater was having a crazy sale on the miktek mpa201 a little while ago. The pre is supposed to be in the neve family sound with ami transformers for each mic and line level inputs... It was $999, now it's $1499 for 2 ch., xlr's for each ch. no eq, just impedance, mic/ instrument / line level, HPF, Gain, and output trim. Has anyone used this Pre ?

As long as there is space on the rear panel I guess it wouldn't be hard to install a dedicated XLR line input permanently wired to the line input transformer?

There are already two xlr inputs, one for mic and one for line. Only one output though.
