Hey Kcat, I am really happy for you, I know what it's like to chase a sound ... I am struggling with getting the recordings I want recently on my voice and before it never seemed to matter.. for some reason the engineer keeps over shadowing the artist..🤦♂️

Thx Chase, its funny cus I built both the c12 and mk-u47,with best caps and tubes but always wondered about a 67-87. So, when Bryce dropped them I grabbed two hoping they would suit my voice and knowing I could always use them as workhouse mikes. But first time I plugged one into the 412 and hit that tone bottom, I knew this was working and peeps like Martin and Ragan who I share working mixes with both said they could really hear the difference. I guess we need to be open minded about trying new gear ? Good luck on your journey !

That's true, you never know what will suit you best until you try it.
I used a U87 for a decade. I took it for granted, because I knew little about mics at the time I got it. I was working full time producing music for commercials, and needed something pro, and that's what they were using in the studios I went to, and that's what they were selling at the pro shops in NY then. Also, there wasn't a hundred choices or clones then. You either bought a Neumann, or you didn't have a Neumann.
I sold it when I left the business, never realizing just how good a fit it was for me until I began trying to find a good mic I could afford when I started again five years ago. I tried the Bock 195 first, then the Blackspade UM-17, then tried the Thiersch M7 capsule in Blackspade, a few nice Avantone mics and eventually the Soyuz 0-17 and 0-19 FET. The Soyuz seemed like a good fit too, and guess what, it has a capsule similar to a K67.
Only after I did a shootout at the Barbershop Studios where engineer Jeremy Gillespie works did I really see what fit me best. The U47 I tried was beautiful, perfect in fact, but the U67 just had that something extra. So, it seems a 67 and 87 are the mics for me. I'll probably get the upcoming Stam SA-47 when it comes out, since I'd like to have at least one Neumann style mic, and as good as the WA87 obviously is, I'd love to have one with a tube.
One day I might get the Neumann TLM-67 and the Max Mod kit, but I'd have to try it to be sure it was "the one" before making that kind of investment.
Vincent will bring his Max Mod 67 over to my place in a couple of weeks and we'll do a little mini-shootout together.

I have been saturating the input on e Gtr, vocals and drums and experimenting with output levels too and really liking how you can affect the sound. I don't expect the 412 to sound nevey but I sure like its API sound ! We designed the WA412 with saturation in mind for the input stage! I find myself cranking the input barely into the red, and then backing it off a hair. Works wonders for gritty electric guitars and drums that are close mic'ed. Obviously it's a preference thing, but I like them running hot on a lot of transient rich sources. Smooths and gently compresses transients in a pleasing way. ATM, the 412 is my favorite preamp we make, due to the extended low end frequency response of the altran transformers. Happy recording! Cheers

For anyone considering a voice over microphone: Thanks for posting, V. He definitely makes that mic sound pretty darned good. It has less transformer squish than I thought it would, which I think helps it for VO a lot. I keep thinking I have to pick one of these up at some point. The only thing that's been stopping me is I've been waiting on Guosheng Zhang from 3U to finish the VO mic he's been tinkering with at my behest that can switch from transformer-fed to transformerless. A few weeks ago he said he was working on an idea for switchable capsule heads, too.... but, I digress. I think for VO, given what I'm hearing here, the WA87 would be a fine axe for commercials and animation.
