I'm torn between the Chandler Limited RS124 and a killer LA2A clone. The budget exists for one or the other but, unfortunately, not for both. To be used for bass (primarily), but also for some vocals, acoustic guitar and the occasional overdub (electric, steel guitar). Thoughts?

Welcome, nashbass! I would definitely go with the RS124. It's the best bass comp I've ever used. Talk about lock down. And it's a tossup for best on vox between it the Sta-Level and CL-1b. But the 124 is so flexible.

At NAMM I couldn't make the RS124 sound bad, as much as Adam tried to stop me, it just didn't sound bad on any of Randy's demo tracks and Damn it if I didn't try ! Now if Adam and the guys up in Iowa want to send me one for a while I would be glad to continue to try and see if I can find something it sounds bad on!
Welcome to the party Nashbass!

Our own Randy Kohrs had provided the guys at Chandler with a bunch of demo tracks for the show. Since Adam had brought some comfy stools and I kept heading back to the Chandler booth. Between Adams demos he let me play ( bass was a big part of his dog and pony show) so I screwed with it and wouldn't disappoint, and it almost pissed me off because I am well known by manufacturers for making their boxes suck ( the stories of me making a few cry are all to true). I can't say Wade and Company nailed the Abby road sounds, but I can say they made a box with multiple personalities that just seamed to work on everything ! If someone were looking for a first high end Comp, This would be my choice, simply because It works on what ever you through at it.

Ha! I'd love to hear stories about making manufacturers cry.
Randy Kohrs is actually a good friend of mine. Randy has just about everything in his studio and we hung out last week listening to several different pieces I've been considering.

CL1B is great on those sources, while still remaining pretty transparent. You can change euphonic tonal character with swap of tubes - Telefunken, Mullards, and so on.
LA2A is less versatile without all the envelope controls, but has a certain sound.
RS124 will be more useful for drums.
You should probably audition, see which kind of overall tone you like.

Randy gave me all kinds of great tracks including banjo, acc guitars, bass, strings, piano etc... He is a fantastic engineer and his engineering acumen is world-class. Tony Maserati has been using them passing much source through them including recently Beyonce and Alicia Keys vocals. The RS124 is all over Lemonade, and on Alicia's stuff a couple weeks ago they were used on all LD vocals and parallel mix bus for two tracks. I think an Alicia single came out yesterday? The thing about the RS124 is it's ability not muffle transients at heavy compression levels.

Well, it's a done deal. I pulled the trigger and bought the RS124 today! Shipping from Sweetwater so if I don't have it Saturday then it'll arrive early next week. Can't wait to get it in line and start using it on tracks!

Great decision I believe. I run everything through it. It's a better maker.

I'll be the groove killer here and say the LA2a. It's proven. A classic. In use worldwide for decades. I'm sure the RS124 is great, but the LA2a is a must have IMO. Get both?

It would be a sad day to mix and track without an La2a.... That's all I can say. I've been without one for awhile (probably why I've been grouchy heh) and just had Dan Deurloo make me a dual LA2a with all the good stuff, and the hot rod mods. Mixing is soon much easier now. Standup bass is infinitely easier to mix now. Plugs suck when it comes to tube compressors. Happy camper here....

I like the idea of having high end gear that's not so common. I'd probably rather have the Soyuz 0-17 mic and the RS124, than a U-47 Clone and a Sta_Level, but I would have to try both to be certain. That's why I chose the Dizengoff D4 REDD 47 style preamp, just to be a little different. And of course because it was affordable.

Don't want to turn that upside down. The other thing, no one has ever asked me if I had a RS124 at the studio. I've been asked dozens of times about an LA2a though..... Given unlimited funds and rackspace I'd have a pair of both, but I have neither, so it's the LA for me.

Martin, your video was one of the reasons I purchased the Soyuz 0-17 mic. That and after getting the 0-11s I knew I had to have it. Now I just need to figure out how to justify the RS124.

Congratulations Mike, that's truly awesome !!! The 0-17 is even better than my signal chain and environment. I'd love to hear some tracks done with those mics when you're ready.
I happen to have the Soyuz 0-19 FET in my place for a few days. It's really good, but not the 0-17. My Blackspade UM17R Mk.II clearly outgunned it. But again, put it in the right place, with the right signal chain, it might really shine.
It's kind of intuition, but I suspect the Chandler Abbey Road gear would be right up my alley. I hope I can make it to Nashville sooner than later, I'd love to hear those things close up at Randge's place.

For LA2A inspired designs you could look into the JLM LA 500.
