Hi ruffrecords . I screenshotted a picture of the buy it now button on the purple site Rob's Zulu thread. Curious to hear your findings etc....Been following your posts about tube circuits and consoles for years now at Group DIY. Mucho respect. Thanks -L. What’s the word on the large frame version you were working on? Stereo rack version jumped in front of the modular multitrack but the bones for each are established. The stereo rack version keeps growing more tentacles which then downstreams to the modular system. I have to keep a tight lip though. Thanks -L.

Would be great addition to the stereo bus.

Right on Langston! Another Upstate Entrepreneur making it happen. Rochester has your back. So many great audio companies from up here, MXR, ART, Whirlwind, Handsome Audio, Integer Audio, and I'm missing about 17. I'm buying this just to support you, and i'm sure I will be the better for it.

I've been really re-digging my Zulu lately.
Not that I ever really stopped digging it. I just had a patchbay ghost that was screwing up that insert pair (nothing to do with Zulu) and I'm in school and blah blah blah...just hadn't used it in awhile. Fired it up a few times recently and it's been giving me grins. What a cool box.

Just seems to pop off the top end of everything. But then sometimes I friggin love the thing. Takes the harsh right out of a gnarly e.gtr.

Just seems to pop off the top end of everything. But then sometimes I friggin love the thing. Takes the harsh right out of a gnarly e.gtr. I love mine, too. The other day, it actually astonished me with how beautiful it made the top end of a mix I was working on. I simply could not have gotten that sound ITB, and I'm not sure I could have gotten it with other OTB tools, either. I also agree, however, that it can be tricky to dial in at times. IMO, the "trickiness" is less from how many categorical options there are, and more from how many clicks there are on the dials. There are just so many combinations, it can get a little dizzying. indiehouse, being able to bypass it easily has become pretty key for me. I have it set up on a pair of ins/outs on my interface (via patchbay) so I can use an I/O plugin to quickly A/B with it in or out. Lately, I've just been level matching by changing the (digital) makeup gain coming back into my DAW. If you can spare 2 I/Os on your interface, give it a shot.

Thinking about picking one of these up but wondering what people's current opinions about it, especially since some highly regarded tape plugins came out this year (Acustica, IK, etc.). Any thoughts are appreciated, and would love to hear what you're using it on, comparisons to tape/saturation plugins, if you're using it on the 2 buss and all that fun stuff...

I’m in the same camp as indiehouse post above . I also have a hard time dialing it in , but when you get it dialed in it’s a great tool . I also find tracking with it then using it on the 2 buss with those tracks it really shines. In the plugin world I’m really liking the IK tape sims .

I had one for a while but sold it. It’s a cool box but it’s passive and really reacts differently depending on where you have it in your chain and how you drive the circuit. And there’s no easy way to bypass it. For those reasons I had a hard time quickly dialing in a sound. I perfered my RND 542’s, both for sound and workflow reasons. That being said, I may try one of his newer rack mount boxes. That may solve the issue for me.

I still have mine and I still like it and use it. Like others have said, it’s a bit tricky to dial in, but mine sits on the 2-bus after the IGS S-type bus comp. I drive it a little harder or a little softer, depending on the song and Zulu settings. I think cutting down the number of variables helped me.

I've been waiting for them to release the Zulu Modular so I can pick up 8 or more channels to use during tracking. But Acustica Taupe and IK tapes have come out recently and sound pretty good. I'm wondering how much better Zulu might actually be? It'd be nice to have 8 or more channels of Zulu, but I have to wonder if it would still be worth spending that much. I generally always like the idea of trying to track sounds the way I want them going into the computer, but $2k or more for the Zulu is still a nice chunk of money.

I find Zulu pretty darn useful and flexible. Like all outboard, it takes some time to find optimal settings, but I love the thing. It is Tape-ish... and more so than my plugs for sure. But yes, the UAD Ampex is pretty convincing for a plugin. I use it quite a bit

I have had mine since the pre order.
I also own quite a few of the tape emulations, slate, waves, IK multimedia
None of them are as good as the Zulu.
Try these settings...
HX, HI, bias 6 o clock, Enhance 7 or 8 o clock, HI (top to bottom settings for knobs)
Run into it as hot as you can without clipping your D-A, and you will need some make up gain (Don't use the ENHANCE knob to get your make up gain)
I basically get the gain out of Logics IO plug in.
Cheers

Really appreciate the feedback everyone. I guess my main questions are-
1. Do you use it often/work well for individual tracks or is it better for just buss duties?
2. Do you think its worth the $500+ of difference than the best tape plugins available? (or do you use anything in its place that gets close that is cheaper)

I personally use it more on individual tracks. But it works great on the 2 Buss. 2. For me, yes it’s well worth it. But I am always looking for that little something extra that makes things special. This is one of those things in my setup.
