As far as price - it depends on what all you have done. Email Shannon and he can tell you. @ $800 for the works. That's a lot of money - but it was worth it in my mind. A Blackspade UM25 with the Tim Campbell capsule is $2699 Peluso 2247LE - $2434
If you bought everything new, this would come in at $2200. I haven't tried the UM25C - but go listen to it on the Zenpro clipilator and it sounds NOTHING like this mic. Completely different idea. Not saying it's worse - just saying they sound totally different based on those clips. I've owned 2 Peluso 2247LE's - and in my opinion, they were shaped much like the stock Miktek - smiley faced - and lacked the smooth midrange that this mod seems to add. I'd love to try one again, though.
Hell, maybe we should just shoot it out with all of these mics. I'd be interested in how it compares.

here's what i heard, the modded mic sounds smoother through the whole range, almost compressed in comparison?, much less high mid gravel, less strident and eesssee. nice mic, really nice voice JK. Your voice is begging for a u47/M7 capsule to my ears, though this does sound great.
edit; is the elam 251 jeffs? that thing sounds sweet, and makes the modded CV4 sound hi mid gravely to me again in comparison, still sounds good though, i would totally use it, but that 251 sample is record ready to my ears. Makes me re think my U47 comment.

Yeah - that's Jeff's...It's not what I would call a prototypical 251 sound...Definitely more pillowy...Beautiful mic. For my CV4 mod, I wanted a little more top end than Jeff's 251...and with running it through a Sta-Level and using Jeff's VC528's for some goo and filters, I think I can get close...

Here's an example through this chain CAPI VP28-->Sta-Level-->CAPI VC528 I took out a little around 650hz and a smidge around 2.5k. Also ran a deesser... Without Verb - snd.sc/14k51ZNWith Verb - snd.sc/1cqK148This is more real-world...

there is nothing between me as I listen and your voice.. and I mean that as a HUGE compliment.
If I were to level one tiny criticism, its a touch , and I mean a touch, and we are listening to a naked vocal (not in mix) piercing ... But in a track , may not even percieve it.
I too think, your voice would sound awesome on a U47, but then again.... whos doesnt 8)
nice...
I do wonder, not knowing the price of the mod, that with the mic running 1600 here in Oz, and the cost of shipping, labour and new capsule if this might not work for those of us on this side of the pond.
Still, the CV4 is a really really good mic, the MOD aint doing it any harm, and John your are a fine singer...
cheers

Mod sounds great. Damn. Anyone want to buy an unmodded CV4, I can't sink more money into mics!

I've gone down the U47 trail...and it just didn't work for me. Maybe a $10,000 vintage one would work, but I'm thrilled with this $2200 mic...

Your voice sounds good John. The mic's good too, clearly, you can make records with this. I keep hearing a resemblance to an AKG414, There's something similar going on, a certain realism.
The vocals on my album "Watching the Days Fall", were done with mainly done with with a U87 and a couple with a 414, I just picked what sat in the track better. The 414 helped with the busier tracks, the more acoustic singer/songwriter tracks were better suited to the Neumann. I bet the CV4 would do something similar in busy tracks, give you just enough of a standout sound to lead the song. I've heard one or two of cowboy's songs with the CV4, and he makes it work beautifully, but I still prefer his tone with Neumann or Blackspade a little more.

You do have a strong voice, don't know if I would call it piercing though. You remind me of the male version of Allison Krauss. Her voice could be said to be piercing at times but I've yet to hear anyone complain about it. Ha

Yet I haven't shit in a boot...(there's an urban legend about Alison Krauss...My voice can definitely be a problem child.

First off I want to say thank you to everyone. Like we all know we've been in the business long enough That there isn't one thing that makes everybody happy. But the most important thing is what makes you happy. I worked on small to big projects, The common thing of them Was to enhance the sound the artist, instruments, and make something good better. A lot of blessings and a lot of luck I've been able pull that off. And again achieve what the artist wants. That aka "zing" is gone that was The goal. Now that the goal was Achieved why not make it better. Come on we're geeks it's in our blood. So let's add those Legendary Tones and traits that we all in someway love, and mix it togather, and throw it in a baking pan let the dough rise, dinner is served. Of all the custom Mics, capsules, tuning, requests, I've done. The most important thing from my point of view, or how I view what I do is........
To capture EMOTION's , in its purest, Smallest subtleties of air movement. So that It can be shared, and enjoyed by all. The biggest joy is to see someone singing into something. I built for them and see them smile With confidence sing On a new level they love what they hear. Hell yeah I wish I could sing. Kind of pisses me off autotune cant even help me.... Lol. You guys rock.

Very cool John. I would love to visit his lab and see some of the capsule building process. Is the capsule being replaced with one he built himself? You know a guy is serious when he has his own gold sputtering machine. Keep us posted on the progress.

Ah - I left you out Scott! (Scott makes the Red Dot and Blue Dot Op Amps...and apparently a mean acoustic guitars) Yes - builds his own capsules. Shannon is the go-to guy for Blackbird - and if you've seen that mic locker - you know that's some heavy shit.
