I think I remember him, he mainly worked in the DriveThru studio with pro control if I'm not mistaken. Do you no Ricky Cobble? He is a real good friend of mine. I assisted on few sessions with him at oceanway and Clint blacks studio, I actually help them lift those heavy ass ATC monitors that he had soffited.

I don't...Billy just mixes in that front room - he's mixed a bunch of stuff for me. Actually, I don't know a whole lot about Sound Stage. I know that's where Chuck Ainley is, right?

Yes, that's where Chuck is, also Warren Rhoades of Rhoades Audio. I was just there a couple of weeks ago and bought 2 SSL buckets from him. I'm building a small SSL4k. The front room at Soundstage is called the DriveThru. I done alot of backups in that room till 3&4 am 5 days a week. SHEEW!!!

I'm thinking of either selling or upgrading my CV4. Four years later whats the consensus on the mod discussed here? Still loving it?

I didn't have Shannon do an upgrade but I did change out the capsule in my CV4. Seriously, night and day difference. I originally bought the CV4 because it was supposed to be smooth and no siblance. I found it to be unusable on the alto voice I bought it for. It had a nasty zing and got real strident on higher notes. I couldn't cut 25k-3.5k enough to make it usable. I was all set to sell it and decided to take a chance and ordered a Beesneez k7 capsule. Everything i disliked about the mic was gone. The CV4 is now my favorite mic on that particular alto voice. If you are fairly handy with a soldering iron and can do neat work, just mod it yourself. For less than $300 USD, you can have one really great sounding mic. It's a keeper for me.
Just to add on a little... IMHO, the capsule accounts for 65-75% of the tonality of a mic, assuming the electronics were designed correctly. A capsule swap will be the biggest change that can be made. The tube and transformer don't have nearly the impact on the overall sound. but, that's just my opinion. The design and electronics in the CV4 is very good. there isn't some glaring issue in the engineering of it. The weak point is the capsule itself. Changing that makes a world of difference.

I would say the capsule is 80-90% of the sound.
