All right here's mine finally. Went with the rock guitars approach. Fastest mix I've ever done and it could use some tweaking but I gotta move on to the next thing! Had a blast with this, thanks wiz ! If anyone has criticism about the mix and/or production, I'd love to hear it....... m.soundcloud.com/treehil/i-wont-cry-master

OK, different approach, this time with the brand new Mixbus 32C. Much less compression and pop sound. Really different.

Just compared to the old mix with Mixbus 3. Wow, like the old one sounds boxy now to me. But also i guess i am excessive in the highs now. They are seductive to use on the new Mixbus. Mixed on same monitors at home. Like the new version better, though.

New mix definitely sounds different, much more open with the high end but certainly not a bad amount, I rather like the second mix compared to the first. I can really feel the compressor on this track though. I am listening through headphones and I definitely feel a bit of the pumping that you don't hear on the previous mix so much, probably due to the less crisp overall sound? Is that just me, and is that intended to get it more in your face? I hear mixes on the college radio more that definitely are going for the pumping. Mainly, I want to learn more about your approach to the song. If I have time this weekend I'll see if I can do a mix of this through my console 1 setup

Yes, there is a compressor in the master-bus, and in a different setting, after trying a bit around. Yes, if you hear a bit more of it, then it is because i really kicked the compressors and limiters on some tracks overboard. Then i found the dry sound too relaxed or stepped back. If you hear a bit of radio vibe in this, then it is what i wanted. It has it's color, and i tried to set it to be musical, but did not invest much time in it. In a production i would most probably send the mix without compressor in the master bus and leave it to the mastering engineer. Maybe with the other version as a very rough example in which way i thought it might go then with compression... The compressor is the Stillwell Rocket and this time i started with the "Nashville" preset, LOL. In this ballpark. Last time i tweaked the "Los Angeles" bus preset but the old setting did not fit the new mix anymore IMO. What i should note is, that i mixed much faster than the previous time. Not only i knew the tracks and did not change panning, but also i think i could find what i wanted with the 4-band better than with the lasts mix, which now sounds mushy to me. Maybe the tonal balance is not perfect, and it could take a bit more lo-mids and a tad less highs. But i think i got more definition much earlier with the new EQ and therefore also mixing to a musical balance was much easier to get for me after initial EQ setting. I most probably would leave the mix alone for the next day, listen again and try to give at least a bit more low fundament without losing the openness with fresh ears, most probably trying to achieve this with guitars and doing "something" for the bass. I know it could sound better. Piano is right, i would not touch this anymore. Although it is not my own style generally, i like vibe of most of wiz's songs. And try to make them something very listenable. I hope i can get much nearer to my "visioned" sound signature after a bit of practise with the new "desk". From loading the old project into mixbus to export it took about less then an hour including a phone call, a coffee and a cigarette. I really dig the new mixbus.
Console 1 is something like a directly competitive product, at least from the marketing. Right? The "channel strip" functionality is something i would like to achieve with my Tascam US2400 and Mixbus. I already have some ideas how to achieve this. Console 1 has not a single fader, right? Workflow could be also faster than pure ITB work, but i would miss faders if i already have a control surface... I have the strong feeling the hardware is more like a dongle from functionality. OK, the marketing is good, but it essentially is a knob box with switches, right? How would you rate it's build quality?

Build quality is great! Metal box, instant recognition, emulation sounds great. I use it in conjunction with my artist mix. There is a volume fader, but I use that as a comp make up. I had a US 2400, it is solid as well. I sold mine and miss having 24 faders, but the artist mix has great pro tools integration obviously, superior to Hui.
Between the two I have a great feel, and use a fd tranzport for my transport control.

In the context of slowly integrating my Slate MTi2 touch screen into my DAW, I revisited Wiz's "Won't Cry No More" and did another mix with the Raven monitor in front of me, and in my new room before the acoustic treatment goes up. More on that later in another thread. So far, I haven't gotten very deep at all into the Raven, other than liking a 27" touch screen monitor right in front of me compared to using a 15" MacBookPro for DAW for the last couple years. I'm still using my main laptop for DAW until I decide whether to keep my 2008 MacPro or upgrade to a T-bolt capable DAW computer. I still have my keyboard and mouse in a slide out tray under the desk with the Raven. The monitor itself is nice, not as good as an Apple monitor, but good enough, and the tilt stand on the MTi2 is quite clever. The software is bit fiddly to set up, but once done, seems to work regularly. I'm just beginning to transition from the mouse to the touchscreen. The first benefit is two-finger dragging the timeline the in edit window. Cool. DP doesn't have a really easy way of swiping the timeline. The transport buttons are neat, but I'm already good with the numerical keypad in DP land. I like the tape-style autoloacation function, the markers in DP are again awkward to me. The macro creation and button menus are where I think the real value of the Raven is. I'm looking forward to creating the shortcuts I think I need, when I get some time. I honestly don't do enough engineering to really get good at it, but I'm still making progress. One thing I didn't do on this mix was use the multi-touch fader window on the Raven. This mix is a rough balance, there's no automation and the faders are static. I just adjusted some bite volumes. I did try out the mix window, and the faders' action is pretty neat. I never did a lot of fader moves at once in mixes after automation came in. Not sure if DP has an SSL style punch in update fader automation mode. If so, I could use the Raven faders easily. Remains to be seen. Anyway, here's the mix. I thought the song needed a stronger 8th note pulse, so I overdubbed and replaced Wiz's hi-hat, played the cowbell (of course) and added two guitars and the Farfisa Combo organ part. (Farfisa is actually a VI, guitar-to-midi recording and post editing.) www.dropbox.com/s/vmrgf0g9yedsggc/Won%27tCryNew3%20mix%20copy.mp3?dl=0

I use this one, from Sonuus. USB powered. www.sonuus.com/products_i2m_mp.htmlIt works pretty good, but you have to edit and clean up the performance afterward. I'm not a very good keyboard player.

Thanks Don, these had gone completely off my radar. I remember the Roland gizmo that "Elvis" Huart eluded to - madly expensive. Will be getting one of these sonuus ones.Interesting that the Namm guy says that it will track string bends too!Mad! (sorry for off topic)

I was wondering what you were doing, gonna do... a thread on it would be great. There is a big difference listening to this mix straight on drop box vs downloading it and listening to it on Quicktime... sounds way better downloaded. Will be interesting to hear your thoughts, post acoustic treatment. I have so much fun doing these, sharing the songs and hearing everyones take. You are spot on with the need for the hi hat... if I were a better drummer, the song would be stronger for sure... Love the cowbell, of course...8) As far as midi guitar thingamadoosies... I have a Fishman? Triple play, i have attached to my variax.. both of which really never get used...(the variax got its first look in for years, as the sitar in that song I shared a while back, cloud nine.) The fisherman is cool, in that its wireless and rechargeable, and requires no drilling on your axe and is removable... don't even know if its still sold and or supported. thanks again for sharing... cheers Wiz

Excellent mix!
Wiz is totally right about the dropbox streaming. Don't! When i listened to the stream i thought the guitars sounded rougher and when the voice kicked in i thought it would not blend / glue too good to the rest of the mix. When listening the downloaded mp3 with foobar player, i had to look into the dsp configuration if there is any plugin doing stuff on it (which was not the case), because it sounded a lot different and way better downloaded. Seems the dropbox streaming adds really ugly artifacts. Made quite some serious negative impact.
I really like the sound of the voice in your mix. The whole song has this cool classic rock sound the others mentioned and i like it very much. Man, this Farfisa idea was great, and i really like how you added the nice guitar bells and whistles at the end. Makes the song sound more varied with style. Definitely i think it has a cool 80's radioplay vibe the way you extended and mixed it. This sound is pretty rare nowadays IMHO and i was surprised to hear a so different interpretation. It was a pleasure to listen to your mix! Thanks, Don!
P.S.: I really like the dynamics of the mix. It has a DR of 8 and to me it sounds like a pretty universal mix that fits radio as well as relaxed listening of an album with good playback equipment.

Thanks sbf.
I just put FF Pro-L at the end of the 2-bus and brought the level up to -1 with about 2-4 dB of limiting. I thought I was getting around 10-12 DR.
I didn't consider there's a degradation with Dropbox's media player. I checked to see if the link played, but of course I listened to the mix on my computer.
Probably the only music I'm capable of making will come out sounding like classic rock. Ha.
