Fess up, RealGearHeads, what inane audio gear have you designated your gift to yourself this festive season?
My silly gift to myself this year is an Electro Harmonix Ring Thing!

Once a couple labels get around to cutting some checks I'll probably pick up an older U87.
I've been buying a lot of guitar pedals lately...it's about time to purge some because I have way too many fuzz pedal for someone who mostly records acoustic music

Everybody in my house is sick this weekend so all I m wishing for is a healthy holiday! Sorry to hear it, hope they're well soon! Unusually mild winter in Ireland this year. 9C (48 F) today, usually by now we'd have frost almost daily and temperatures floating around 2C (35F). Was out doing the lights at my folk's place today on the outdoor trees in just a thin hoody and a t-shirt. sean shame on any guitar player who sells a fuzz pedal. Any particular weird ones worth mentioning?

Mainly need a Tim Campbell CT12 to "top off" my 251 build, which already is sounding nice with a chinese K67. I'm on TC Santa's waiting list.
Could also use a trip to Atlanta and Florida.

Only thing on my wishlist this year is my jeromemason built 251, which is currently with Shannon getting some capsule and body/headbasket love. I am drooling with anticipation here! Got a lot of very cool sessions and video shoots coming up that I would love to have this mic on! Good things to those who wait, or something like that... Merry Christmas, y'all.

What I want isn't gear.
I want to be able to listen to tracks and simply mix them by feel into something wonderful.
As it stands, I agonize over mixes, redo them a hundred times, listen to them everywhere and get to a point where I can no longer hear the differences.
I want to stop that, and just flow with the tracks, but it's hard.

They talk about mixing a song a day, maybe in 3-4 hours.. And here I am spending days to weeks on single songs to get things just right...

Svart, I feel that way too. I've found my agony over mixes mainly comes from not tracking right in the first place, or accepting sub-par performances because I want to move on.
"Right" can sometimes not happen because of having the wrong gear, wrong mic, a bad room., or a bad day, but if I miked a little more carefully, I might have prevented much worry. The other factor of agonizing over mixes is level. When I use plugs to try getting higher levels without distortion, my tracks get too edgy. My benchmarks are well recorded, and well mastered tracks, so that might just be the missing ingredient we're all looking to emulate, top quality mastering. Cowboy manages really good quality mastering somehow, maybe he'll pass on some tips.
After a big Thanksgiving here, and then a big holiday party to celebrate a friend's 80th birthday, ( yikes), I've got just enough spendable money to maybe afford this, $11.95, and it's all mine.

I want to stop that, and just flow with the tracks, but it's hard. Add me to that list. I'm really happy with where my productions are going, but god am I slow and constantly indecisive. To be fair though, the top guys do nothing but mix all day everyday as a full time gig. Speed will naturally come with that.
