I've never heard a cello sound like that either, it makes my curly hair stand on end.

Definitely have no idea what the reverb is but that vocal is outstanding.....and I'm not a fan of the genre either. Very nice.

I remember reading about the signal chain on her previous album, but the only thing that stuck was they used and La3 on the vocal. Don't recall what else.

hello from the outside is right! when the band kicked in, someone compressed her right outside the friggin room! I hope thats the transcoding on this link, and not the SNL mix, if it is the SNL mix? it's a godam shame.... The hall reverb on the intro sounds huge though....
i should also add that she is a badass!

I liked the LA3a so much better than our Fairchildern and LA2as that I bought one to take into Motown around 1970. That said, the modern UA version was quite a disappointment sound-wise.

Sounds like a short, duller plate to me with short predelay.

I'd like to know what they did with the Cello, besides having a really good Cellist.

I agree with John sounds like a short or gated plate.
I thought the percussion was the standout on that performance.

Leave her vocal as natural as possible when it's alone, exposed and less dynamic but then hit it real hard when the band kicks in and her vocal gets really dynamic. It's a live feed so there's no adding compression after the fact. Those notes she hits in the chorus are LOUD! She belts it out like nobodies business. Sounds like SHE's squashing the compressor instead of vice versa! Lol.

Well in this day of auto tune, poor mike technique and little control and enunciation: Adele steps up and nails a live performance. She's bona fide !! Man that gal can sing !!!

I thought I heard some of that too, but wasn't sure if it was just nerves shaking the vocal chords.

I don't hear any pitch correction on her vocal. You can even hear where she gets pitchy in her second line "they say that time is supposed to heal ya" and there is no correction. She has always had a nice vibrato. Listening to the entire performance live on Saturday night she had a few pitch mistakes which made it so nice to hear. I'm guessing this is the mono center channel from the broadcast's 5.1 channel Dolby Digital feed. Nothing was done to it afterward. The equalization and processing was all done before it was separated by SNL's audio board into those six discrete channels for broadcast. This however is funny: www.dailymail.co.uk/video/tvshowbiz/video-1230054/I-don-t-need-autotune-Justin-Bieber-interrupts-live-show.html

I heard some "pitchiness" so I thought probably no auto-tuning.

Isn't the term "Auto" a misnomer here? If there was any pitch correction, it was applied subtly and "Manually" (by a trained professional ). I wouldn't be surprised if someone applied a subtle tweek here and there, but if so they missed a spot or two. Bottom line for me.. I don't care one way or the other - an outstanding performance.. Just Incredible!

I remember reading about the signal chain on her previous album, but the only thing that stuck was they used and La3 on the vocal. Don't recall what else. In all of the clips I saw on tv or the web of the last album, it looks as though she used a U87. She's such a good vocalist that she would sound good on nearly any mic.

The 'verb on the SNL performance doesn't sound much like the single. The studio recording 'verb swells at different moments in the song, and sounds gorgeous. I'd like to know what it is. Of course it's mainly Adele's voice that's making the hair stand on your arm.

Adele uses a rode n2 into a 6176. That is all. Afterwards there is a slight touch up with editing and some plate reverb but her producer/co-writter is a somewhat minimalist. And yes, her entire hit album vocals were recorded using that chain exclusively. And no, I don't usually like that genre but I think she's talented.
