For all interested this is a long boring unboxing video of the Stam SA-2A. It is not scientific or technical or professionally edited. It was just a quick attempt to get something up for people to see.

Just got here, didn't read the entire thread, but the takeaway is this sounds right, yes? How much?
I've often wondered when a reliable respected small company like Warm Audio will come out with an LA2A redux. The Dizengoff 864 varimu is just coming out. I can't wait to hear some reviews and thoughts about it. If it's in the same zone as an LA2A or a Sta-Level, I'm very interested. Their D4 preamp is so good.
I'll never be a DIY guy, much respect to those who can here.

A bit of a review... the unit powered up and ran fine... didn't seem to have proper tube burn-in before shipping, but I'll probably open it up and put in some NOS tubes/valves anyhow. I release and recovery time is VERY slow. But it may be the result of none of the components being "broke in" yet. The 1/4" ins and outs did not work. The XLRs worked just fine, I gave it a good workout with bass and guitar after the usual preamps. Not great on bass but I liked it on guitar. Then pumped some sampled drums through it, which worked pretty good. I'll give that a "B+". I have some group vocal sessions coming up tomorrow. That will really tell me how it does. Because I'll compare it with identical mics, identical preamps in stereo config and use the SA2a on one side and an LA2a on the other side. XY config, not AB or ORTF which would be unreliable. What's the word, Ward? I fired her up last night and the release is definitely very slow. I compared it to the UAD LA2A mkII (silver). The Stam is smoother overall. Doesn't have the saturation of the UAD. Also, the UAD release/recovery is a lot faster. I was only getting around 3db of reduction before the bass started farting out. Tried it on acoustic with similar results. Maybe I should have pulled up the UAD grey model to compare instead? Might have been a better comparison, but isn't the grey a little less versatile than the silver? Still running it through the paces. Overall, it feels like a solid piece. Switches feel snappy, unit has some weight. Gonna pop the lid and have a peek. Not trying to write a review just yet. I'm neither positive or negative on it right now. Going to push it a bit more and see if I can really learn its nuances before passing judgment. Wish it was a tad faster, though.

stam, are these still available for $790 (was that the price)? $790 was a great price, and I thought I even read somewhere that Josh was gauging interest for a second run. Though, after shipping costs (from Chile) and the PayPal fees that he adds on top, it's more like around $1k.

I think it was Serpent working on a dual 500 slot LA-2A a few years back, showed some mock-up drawings on GroupDIY. Never heard anything else about it.

does anyone know if this is a verbatim clone of a LA2A? Just curious..., if it is, the price is really good.

He does have the LA2A all worked I believe and has for a long time! haha. He showed me some of it a long time ago.

For a faster release it´s as simple as replacing the T4B. I will do this free of charge for anyone who wants it, so far only 2 clients out of 130. I went after the original release time with Drip, I specifically requested the slowest version, even though people tend to like a faster one better, the entire point was to get as close to the original unit as we could.
There is also the UREI and Kenetek alternative for the T4B, however, Greg at Drip makes a faster one as well (medium fast, medium slow and slow).
Thanks for all the feedback, I am glad you are liking it, a lot of work went into it, including several protoypes of transformers (six of them)

does anyone know if this is a verbatim clone of a LA2A? Just curious..., if it is, the price is really good. I did some vocal tracking with mine last night. It sure as heck sounds like one. And there was definitely some burin in time needed. First session sounded stiff, then the release and recovery times were just terribly slow. They have improved now. Then it developed a hum... now that's completely gone. I still need a faster T4 cell for it, but overall I am delighted with the unit. One note: It doesn't play well with an 1176, for some odd reason. I am used to tracking vocals through a CL1b or LA2a into an 1176 to get the overall tone and dynamic control I want. But this unit sounds better when used on its own.

I believe these had the slowest response time of them all, right? You requested the slowest T4 to use in yours. That's really great of you to offer to replace the T4B for a faster version, but does that mean shipping it back to you in Chile? Just thinking about the shipping costs to get it to you and back.
