GS will absolutely NOT delete members even upon repeated requests. In order to get my account deleted I had to publicly challenge Joolz to delete it if he had the balls. That did it though! You're not kidding... looks like even our fearless leader is back in their 'good' graces! I happened to notice today the BANNED designation no longer besmirches his name... View AttachmentI can understand why they did away with the "delete your own profiles". It hurts their numbers.

New topics are important too. Without new ground being broken in the industry, there can be a lot less to talk about. If I come up with an interesting thought, I'll make a thread. But I try to keep it so I'm not creating a thread for every thought that pops in. From what I've noticed people here tend to be well established with a lot of premium gear and are well sorted, there's a hundred threads I could potentially make on subjects that will at least knock RGO up the search engine ladder. Issue is nobody really seems that bothered, again I've got / had a lot of cheap stuff that does easily compare to the premium stuff and vice versa so it could be an interesting chat. Whilst the site is relatively small it could be worth at least feigning interest. This might not be a popular opinion, but at this point I've figured out how this site operates, I just have to stick a picture up of a new distressor to get more likes than any other post I could concieve.. Let's just put it this way, when I was "expensive" monitor shopping guess how many people bought these Dynaudio's or even better Unity rocks? Two people have bought them, in the history of their sales records from one of the largest distributers in the UK and they were for colleges.. Bashing bedroom recorders has to somewhat stop, in all fairness a rare few of them are just as good as any "pro" I've heard.. Don't get me wrong not many, but still some can achieve incredible things with the odds stacked against them. I'm going to be a hypocrite here but helping out more in the what you working on sub-forum and assisting in songwriting process would go a long way, it's one of the main reasons I go to GS.. I've got a bunch of VERY old songs, that I'm trying to potentially re-use for a new album. Didn't get a single reply here and yes, they're not very good.. Although they're not supposed to be a completely balanced top of the line mix with fluid arrangement, they're ideas I made when I wasn't old enough to drive that could be useful and worth getting some feedback on. Again just my 2c, doubt it'll be a popular opinion but I do try and all that..

The ignore function makes it tolerable. The complaints about every new product come from mostly the same people.

Bashes bedroom recordists? Well, I would absolutely disagree. I run the site and I'm a bedroom recordist. As for songwriting...no one seems interested in it. In fact, I've thought about deleting the songwriting section altogether. Just not much interest. As for the "what are you working on" section...That's basically for posting "what you are working on." There have been a lot of posts here lately about "not working for free...and I totally agree. It's really hard for anyone to come in and spend a vast amount of time re-writing songs, getting in deep with production, etc. for no pay. And maybe you're right - I guess I don't look at this site as that kind of place...GS, Recording Revolution and others probably has that covered.

Agreed 100%. No need to be all things to all people. I don't post a whole lot here on RGO but I absolutely prefer RGO to GS. I know I've been guilty of getting sucked into bullshit on GS. I like it here way better. There is a general congeniality here that I like. I would have to think that expanding membership could diminish that. Maybe make it like Wikipedia with voluntary contributions. I would happily pony up a little bit to keep it small and NOT compromised. Well. Just to let you all know, the donate button has been there since 2013...and I don't I've received more than $200. Where's the donate button at? I've never seen it.

I love sonic quality and expensive outboard as much as the next guy, I'll straight up admit I am somewhat of a picky gear snob (even if I'm on a budget). Plus we've had discussion on 3U audio stuff and some quality lower end gear etc., all I'm saying is the focus and interest is more along the lines of higher end gear and in todays market it is very niche. So if you want more traffic to flow to your site, it has to be opened up to cover a wider basis. If you've already got great gear then I understand, why would you even look at lower end stuff? Personally it doesn't bother me, although I can understand why some might not like it.. For the songwriting stuff / music demo's, it takes about as much effort as it does for you to post a reply on most subjects.. I just slap on a pair of headphones from time to time and give a bit of crit, then I stick something out there and they do the same.. If they want me to re-write their song for them, or pretty much mix their track I'm going to need paying.. Of course you are free to disagree, this is nothing more than an observation and I've seen a couple of comments in various places along these lines. If you're not interested in feedback fine, it won't change a thing.. I'll still hang around here (if you don't banhammer me lol), it seemed like feedback was wanted and sorry if I got the wrong end of the stick.

I'd rather choose to use a service like landr (https://www.landr.com/en) than leaving my music to some random college kid asking for $20 a piece for what they consider to be mastering. BTW I really like the concept of landr utilising a BD analysis as part of their algo. It may not be there yet but given the rate of advancement in machine learning, AI, and its associated subfield of computer science I expect that automated process like landr will get closer and closer to what human mastering engineers can do (although it may be as flexible as human engineers..yet). I'm just an old electric guitar player who's 1st experience with a computer/net/digital recording etc,was in 2011. I'm also a new member here,so I do realize this quote comes from a 2 plus year old thread, but I'm very intrigued by what is meant with the acronym BD? as in "I really like the concept of landr utilising a BD analysis as part of their algo"(obviously algorithm). Sonar x3 I think included a basic version of landr, which I thought was ok,though I thought it made some of my stuff become too bright, also cakewalk forum members generally didn't give it a lot of praise, and I'm not sure, but I don't think Sonar Platinum includes landr anymore, which I think is a bit of a loss,as I'm sure it has become far improved perhaps. Really I just wanted to know what BD analysis is,in the context of KJ's post? Thank You RK Gearslutz is Gearslutz,it changes with the ebb and flow of the music, and production trends of the times-be it bedroom studios,or as a friend recently did- ordered and bought a totally Brand NEW Roland 'Space Echo' from Roland Japan...big AU dollars. Back to my original obviously not accidentally ignored question: what is meant with the acronym BD? as in "I really like the concept of landr utilising a BD analysis as part of their algo"(obviously algorithm)-KJ. So my 1st ever post is not about "the decline of gearslutz",however what I'm asking is part of THIS thread, you people are either ? or cannot answer the question? Answer and I could easily donate. Thank You RK

Personally, I tend to hit the "like" button in the new gear thread simply because I still get the little-kid-on-Christmas feeling when I get new gear and I think other people do to. For me anyway, every piece of nice (meaning quality, not just price tag) gear in my studio has been hard won. I've spent every extra cent I've had on gear since I was about 14 years old (I'm 37 now). Bought and sold and traded and broke and built and blah blah blah a million things through dozens of phases of my musical life. I just like it when someone else gets something they wanted and I pretty much always give a little 'hey, right on!' by hitting that "like" button. Edit: and don't shortchange me on that gear snobbery, bro! It was a PAIR of EL8x

And as for the general discussion here, I like GS and RGO for different reasons, but I like it here way, way more. GS is valuable sometimes for it's traffic/volume. When you just want to triangulate a quick opinion of some piece of gear (like when you're browsing Craigslist or the classifieds or whatever), you can alway find a thread about it on GS. Not too hard to quickly suss out who's a jackass and who has some decent insight (not mutually exclusive of course, hell, even I have some decent insight from time to time) and get a quick and dirty scoop on whether the piece warrants further investigation.
But RGO is where I come for reasonable discussion and dare I say a bit of a sense of camaraderie? I like it here. I've donated before, I'll do it again.

(P.S. Like the font? It's 1997 all over again!)
P.P.S If you all donate and Johnkenn gives me my usual cut, I promise not to use this horrible font again!

I could be wrong...I know matt has been fantastic - he's been pretty much the only member that has been a frequent contributor. Actually, I bet what he has given over the last 3 1/2 years has equaled up to $200. So - sorry - I appreciate that Matt! And others have given when they could - and I appreciate that too! But I would be SHOCKED if the total has been over $500 in three years total. Anyway - I've never really brought it up because - hey - it's not a subscription site. It's not a requirement and I started this place and asked people to come here...so I don't want it to be like a tv preacher. I can afford to keep up the site from month to month...but $1.00 here and there would be awesome! And Ward too!

GS is much more broad based than RGO with a lot more diversity in perspective - for better or worse. If I want top pro advice on how to orchestrate for a string quartet, how to record Rap with street level cred, what the differences are between between Big Beat and Breakbeat Hardcore, different options in placing a Decca-Tree in a moderate sized scoring room, which sample libraries are cutting edge for ambient underscore, or if I just need to find the best place to buy oddball world instruments, it's a great resource that we don't have here.
I love discussing gear (with RGO does great) but I also like discussing the Film/TV industry and career based stuff, which as far as I have seen, RGO is just not the place. I must be the only film composer, music for TV, media based composer/producer type here. And since I'm not in N'Ville, and since I (mostly) don't do country music, it does feel a bit of an odd fit at times...
On GS, the Music for Picture forum is my main hang, and aside from the occasional troll, it's a very subdued, respectful and helpful forum with excellent "hands-off unless needed" - and when needed "done behind the scenes - not in public" moderation by Narcoman - who does an excellent job. There's honestly almost zero drama over there.
Also to note, when I'm over there, I generally don't hit up the subforums that seem to foster a metric-ton $#itstorm of fighting and controversy. So my opinion of "there vs. here" is probably skewed a lot different than what many that hang around here have.
All that said, I'm happy and honored to be here. But anyway, just my $0.02, which, when devalued to streaming rates = $0.0003274.

"Songwriting" never makes a good forum topic for obvious reasons. But I try to post artists' work in it that I think the members here might find interesting or motivating. There was a time 5-10 years back where guys were working like mad on co-writes and writing teams but those days are gone, same with making records to a large degree. Charlie Peacock has a ton of great gear for sale on Reverb right now if anyone is looking for some high end pieces.

It's just trying to give it a push to remain relevant, which GS has a lot of traffic from people who can afford only afford a couple of hundred bucks all the way over to peeps who can afford to spend 10K on a pair of speakers.. So you get that sort of variation, I love a good bargain. End of the day I like RGO and GS for different things, RGO is like the small little tight nit family.. Nice people here, easy to get a long with and when the gear runs dry that's what you need. Some fun people to have a laugh with..
