I was going to ask you if you feel that the Capi adds the same size and girth that the sta does but after listening for myself and not knowing which ones which clip A seems bigger sounding to me.

No, but that's not what it's designed to do. If you had all red dots in there, they add more girth and bottom end.

Something more fair might be the FC526 and WA76. Any chance of doing that Johnkenn?

No, but that's not what it's designed to do. If you had all red dots in there, they add more girth and bottom end. no doubt, the sta- is killer for what it does, but would demolish the bottom end of a mix if you used it all over. The capi seems like an amazing tracking compressor, it just doesn't step on the transients at all from the samples i've heard. I can't wait to get my hands on these.

I doubt it would destroy the bottom end of a mix. theres always a hpf...anyway, I'll try to put up a warm sample. I put these two up because I thought the 526 more than hung with the sta. Btw - A is Sta. B 526. I thought the sta had more artifacts in the compression than the 526. Ymmv.

Not sure I'd call it artifacts. Sounds like more harmonic distortion with the Sta. The 526 is very clean.

The 526 is going to be a brilliant addition to my studio .. here is why. I like the fact that it doesn't have the girth of the STA. I have two STA's, i got girth covered... The compression control of the 526 is the most OPTO sounding FET I have ever heard. Imagine you are tracking or mixing a vocal recorded with the STA, and you have the harmony mirroring the vocal say a 3rd above or below, and you whack the 526 on it... its gonna be great! It also will probably sound fantastic on things like clean electric guitar, imagine a fender strat through a vibro verb, running through that thing... at the price point, hell at a couple of times the price point, thats a hell of a comp. can we get on a pre order list? cheers Wiz

I actually preferred the 526 by a large margin... very smooth in the midrange and as Wiz said opto like. Must have 4!

When jeromemason heard it last week in Nashville at Randge's place, he asked me how I got a FET compressor to sound/function like a VCA comp. I guess these are all good compliments!

what i was saying as far as the Sta- on every track "demolishing" a mix is right though maybe i should have said clog? It's no slight on the Sta- I love the sound of that thing-, but it's thick, its for making a track or 2 stand out, if you put it on multiple tracks with HP's or not, it would simply be too much imo, the larger point is the 526 is looking to be a great console type channel compressor, you could use it everywhere inconspicuously, i see Jeff selling very, very many of these. My earlier prediction of me filling a 51x rack up with these is a real possibility, especially considering the price!

For me, compressors controlling dynamics without hearing it control dynamics is a huge thing. I am all about getting some of Jeff's 526's, a couple more Great River 501's and the Charter Oaks SCL-1 comps as my future purchases. The AML 54F50 is my next purchase coming up soon and then my sights will be set on the others, one piece at a time, slow and steady.

Not for sale yet? Didn't see a way to "add to cart"... No not yet. Still waiting for a couple of outstanding parts to arrive. The amount of work trying to get something new launched is immense. Even I forgot how long all this stuff takes.

most interesting read on J's site! looks awesome! and as usual Jeff doesn't miss a feature i'd look for 8) If my work doesn't start kicking ass again very soon, i could be down for building some of these for guys who want them?... of course that is only if Jeff approves of it, i know he has some very good builders he recommends, i'm just having a premonition of them being completely overwhelmed with the release of this "game changer" compressor, i'd make a substantial bet that this will break the VP28 sell out records we've seen in the past.
side: Tracked some acoustic guitar with JK's 47 and my C12 last night through the VP28's, those pre's never cease to blow me away. (i'll be mopingly boxing up JK's mic for shipping to him the next day or so... 8(

Since the FC526 requires three 2520 style opamps.... Perhaps this is a good time to start building opamps. Suggestions welcomed.
gar2550, 1731, Red, blue dot, others ?
Thank you.

Hey man welcome! for the guys who've been lucky enough to get their hands on these, the overwhelming consensus has been all 1731 op amps.

Thank you Tony; I am a little be ahead then .... I build two extra 1731 to try on the VPs. Well, if the consensus is 1731 I guess I need to order a bunch. My idea is to complete my current 10 space with VPs (6 already) and dedicate other 10 space rack for FC526s

No offense to tonycamphd or NoFilterChuck or anyone else who wants to build my stuff to sell but the only US builder I promote is James Bakker @ www.customanalogservices.com/. I made this agreement with James years ago and he has been nothing but stellar. FYI, the first 20 FC526 kits out the door will be going to James. Not that there aren't other competent builders out there cuz there are. These comps will soon start showing up on eBay left and right and all I can say is buyer beware. Many of those guys do a fine job but with a DIY kit, you better make sure you know and can trust who built it.
