You guys are killing me. I went looking at the supraphonics and now I'm dying for a LM402K.. The hammered version. It sounds astounding. I do have an acrolite but it's never sounded as good as those I hear online. I dunno why. The hammered bronze drums are awesome! RE the Acrolites, have you tried a 10 lug 6.5" drum. It sounds quite a bit different from my 8 lug, 5"...

In case anyone was wondering, a Remo CS head tuned to 3F# sounds pretty great on the 6.5" black magic snare.

I have a 1940s Leedy marching drum if anyone wants to do a trade. TRADE? You must be high!! The latest Supra I have I bought in 2012. It was a 1972 new in box, never opened, and I got it for $187.50 shipping etc all included. It is an astounding drum! I shall never ever part with it. Some guy had an old music store and had 25 of them new in box from 1972 that he was liquidating. If I had my time back, I would have bought 10 of them. I could have sold one to the next 9 drummers who used mine in the studio. I could have sold each one for at least $500. It doesn't work for the kind of projects I do which are predominately modern, up front sounding rock, pop and heavy stuff. I'm serious, anyone wants a 40s Leedy you know where to find me.

Not a big Black B guy but I've been wanting to get my hands on some Acrolites and Supras.

Might be interested in selling the Acrolite at some point. It's a 5" deep one. it sounds fine but I really like a deeper shell for recording.

I really like my 6.5", 10 lug Acrolite limited edition. Check one out if you get a chance...

The 5" deep Supra is a great choice for anything from mid tempo numbers to speed metal. It packs quite a wallop. No need for a 6.5 or deeper, but they are certainly usable there too.

I'm sold on those 6.5" hammered supras. One of these days I'll get one.

If the Joey Kramer drum doesn't do the trick the World Maxx brass snares are very nice. I own a 5" - well built and can't beat it for the price. I also own the 6 1/2" Pearl Steve Ferrone BB knock off but I don't know if they're made any longer. I own 20+ snares but it's the one the gets used 90% of the time. Brass shells have a dryer sound and to my ears are easier to tune for recording. If you've never struck an old Black Beauty you'd be shocked at how dry and "unmetalic" it sounds--nothing like a new Supraphonic.

"unmetalic" it sounds--nothing like a new Supraphonic. To your point... a new Supra does not sound like an old supra. And it's not because of 40 years of use. My NIB from the 70s sounded exactly like my original 78 did. The new ones are more metallic. Not worse, just different. A different flavor I could actually use some times. So, I might pick up a new one too!

Old thread, but I picked up one of these WorldMax snares recently. Great drum and got it for dirt cheap! I also got to compare it side-by-side to a new BB and a Pork Pie BOB. Tuned them all the same with the same heads and was surprised by how similar they all sounded. Also, after a little digging, it appears that the WorldMax with the black die cast hoops is the same drum as the Ludwig Black Magic (apart from the strainer throw off.) Sounds a slight bit more focussed to my ears but very close.

Those look beautiful. Do they make something that's close to a BB?

Those look beautiful. Do they make something that's close to a BB? I probably shouldn't have posted that, I was thinking bell brass for some reason. Either way their drums sound amazing. Super expensive but could be a really cool studio kit.

The Pork Pie BOB, WorldMax, and Ludwig Black Magic are all nice drums, I think they'll get you 90% of the way there. Personally, I've owned a 5" Black Beauty and sold it to get a 6.5", I just find them to be much more flexible and more of the sound most people prefer these days. For a 5" drums an Acrolite or Supraphonic are hard to beat.
The Slingerland Gene Krupa brass snares are another alternative. The 5" seem to go for $100-$200 and the 6.5" for $200-$300. Rogers Dynasonics as well, they get up there for 6.5" though. They are a bit drier sounding than a Black Beauty.
Oriollo makes spun metal drums and are pretty reasonable and sound great. I have a 6.5" aluminum but they make brass and several others as well

Maybe the difference between die cast and triple flanged hoops focusses the sound a bit... But, the thing I wasn't expecting was how close I got the Pork Pie BOB to sound like an actually BB - almost indistinguishable to my ears and the other folks in the room that day. Those Oriollos are pretty sick too. Nice that they're making full kits

Pearl Sensitone Brass Patina - Not a Black Beauty Clone, but a really nice snare.
Another mentionable that I like is the Tama Aluminum Starphonic
There are plenty of really good sounding snares out there, but getting the feel right with the tone is the quest for me.

Also, the Pearl Steve Ferrone signature is supposed to be a BB-type drum... I mixed one of these a couple weeks ago and it sounded really awesome. Enough that I needed to go chat with the drummer and find out what it was.
