It's hard to tell on those clips (It sounds very nice though). Does anyone have a prototype in action to give any more detailed flavor description > especially using microphones? Great question! Being limited with parts, there are no prototypes out in the wild. Other than the unit we sent to Landon to do the official video demo, which we hope should give a decent overview on how much character this Pre has in Mic mode ;-)
The circuit is completely original, but lives in the family of those old British Pre's we all know and love (V series, 47 type). It has its roots in Damon Coffman, who has actually been supplying a good number of NOS tubes we've used in AS products over the years. I worked together with him the last few years and couldn't be happier with where it landed! It packs a serious punch, definitely our first go-to mic preamp with any condenser mic here, and we have all sorts of vintage preamps. To me, it sounds like what I expected some of our vintage preamps to sound like, before we got them and realized they were more transparent than anticipated. Conversely, this has a lot of character, a beefy low end (that doesn't muddy up a signal) and the perfect softening of the high end that one would want/expect from a tube preamp. Extremely musical. Add some lite compression and it sounds like a record.
Cheers, Chris

Thanks Chris, the Golden 58 will be a great addition to peoples tube recording duties, especially considering that it is a two channel unit. I guess I'm looking for a particular flavor to add to my set-up, and without any real examples, or A/Bing - reviews, it's hard to make a call on this. (Even though I trust your golden ears ) I'll probably regret this decision .... (face palm )

We just got the official demo video done and uploaded :-)
This features Mic mode on various sources (as opposed to line mode only for the soundclips). Very happy with the job Landon did on this, especially love the daisy-chaining a Synth from channel 1 to channel 2 he did there at the end.

Chris, will there be some advance notice on when orders will be opening up?
I've learned my lesson not to work or travel those evenings.

Chris,
Is the voice switch just a high pass filter? Am I understanding that right? The text on your website above the new video doesn’t really make sense.

The first small drop on these will be tonight at 8PM EST. We're in full on G58 mode here, gonna be a long weekend.
"Is the voice switch just a high pass filter? Am I understanding that right? The text on your website above the new video doesn’t really make sense." The Voice is just a high pass filter, that is correct. There's just a little more detail into type etc.

I'm curious why this is marketed towards condenser mics in all the copy - is the gain not sufficient for dynamics/ribbons?

I'm curious why this is marketed towards condenser mics in all the copy - is the gain not sufficient for dynamics/ribbons? Dynamics and ribbons typically require more gain from a preamp, and each channel has a max of 56db. With that said though, if tracking a single vocal, you can daisy chain between the two channels and get plenty of gain that way. I was just testing a G58 with an SM7B this morning and WOW, it was the ticket! Can get some serious tube grit that way if you're looking for that sound as well.
I think we will update the product listing accordingly, because anything you put through these sounds amazing.
Cheers, Chris

This really shouldn't be a problem since most people use an interface that provides gain on the line inputs. Get the right tone from the G58, then gain-up!

So it’s a tube preamp that sounds like what people think tube preamps sound like, but usually don’t? I think that’s really cool.
So should I buy 10 of these or ONE ticket to tomorrow’s super bowl? 🤔

It mentions this on the Golden age page but i dont see a limit/compress switch? "The main point of the video is to show the advantage of having the high frequency control on the front panel and the limit/compress switch function."

I believe our IT dept used the video embed box for the 'Opto Comp' when inserting the demo video last night, I just went in and fixed that, thanks!

Am I missing something about doing business with Audio-Scape? I was logged in right at 5:00 Pacific and succesfully added one to my cart. I checked out quickly and when the Paypal processed it said it was not available. If I can get one in my cart why was it removed? I'd love to buy some Audio-Scape, especially this tube pre but this doesn't make sense

They can go real fast. I slept on it for one minute and missed the chance too. More to come though. edit:

The best advice is to make your account, get your shipping and billing ready, all before any drops happen. May not be in this thread, but a few folks recommend that and it's the method that works for me. I wouldn't be too worried about missing this one, Chris makes it sound like it's going to be gold 58's for a while now, so there may be more next Wednesday? (Purely speculation on my part.)
But yeah, even products that have been in their rotation for months (years?) will still sell out in less than a minute regularly. I'm pretty sure with my four orders, by the time I finished checking out and went back to see what was still available, they were out-of-stock on the product I had just ordered. I actually have a VP1290 arriving next week, so maybe I'm being greedy going after the Golden 58.

I'd love to buy some Audio-Scape, especially this tube pre but this doesn't make sense You're not missing anything, all their stuff goes fast. I got one, I think it took me about 10-15 seconds; got my confirmation email at 8:00. The cart is not persistent, it's "first paid, first served", not "first added to cart, first served". It took me a few times to get it right, now I can pretty reliably score one...50/50 anyway. There are a few things you can do that make it possible to grab an audioscape item, if you don't do this you don't really have a shot: Create an account on the A-S site. Enter all following information into your profile; shipping address, billing address, and credit/debit card info. Be ready to go when it's time, and once you add to cart, you can just hit continue, continue, confirm, and you're done. If you use PayPal or do it any other way, you're going to be too slow. Everything must be entered in ahead of time, and make sure you're logged in when ite time to buy. If you're not able to get it after a couple tries, let Chris or Nichole know, and they may be able to help you out (not sure if they'll put one of these back or not, being a limited run of 300). 12 sold tonight, out of 300, so don't worry, you'll be able to grab one if you keep trying. Takes time, I think I tried 3 or 4 times before I got it down enough to be fast enough. They can go real fast. I slept on it for one minute and missed the chance too. More to come though. edit:

I've got a VP1290, great preamp, but if the Golden 58 covers it, I'll have a hard time keeping it. Phenomenal preamp though. I have several Neve types, and it's by far my favorite. I was in at 8:01 and it already said sold out.... Like I said above, I got my confirmation email at 8:00. You gotta be quick.

I picked one up in hopes it'll give me something in the ball-park to a Great River (so I can keep the MP-2NV in the sidecar as opposed to the pseudo-remote setup). I'll be elated if I turn out liking the VP1290 more. Here's to hoping! The Golden 58 at that price point just seemed perfect - I was already looking at 2u single channel units while trying to figure out how to fit everything in the rack space I have and the G58 offers 2 channels at 2-spaces with separate line inputs for interesting patch opportunities. I actually have a VP1290 arriving next week, so maybe I'm being greedy going after the Golden 58.
Haha! I remember this! - I hope that didn't come off as too Burns-ish; in truth, the VP1290 will only be the third preamp I will personally own (outside of preamps in field recorders/interfaces). I'm hoping that I'll be all set once I hit 6-8 channels total, which already feels overkill for the work I've been doing.

I run my sm7b and sennheiser md441 through your 1290, ltl chroma, Dave hill europa, all without needing a cloudlifter. They all have more gain than the Golden though...guess I'll see when mine comes in. Can't wait! Edit: that said, people expect to have to run a sm7b with with cloudlifter, I don't think a preamp shpuld have to run the shure without a cloudlifter to advertise it for use with all types of mics. I think it would be very unreasonable for someone to be surprised they need a cloudlifter with an sm7. So yeah, I would clarify that everything will sound great!

Looks like they shipped today (at least mine), I'm only 2 days from them, so it should be here Thursday. Very much looking forward to it. Immediately going on the mix bus, I'm loving the seperate inputs for that.

Did I hear a rumour that AS were going to recreate the Pye compressor? Wonder how far that is from production?
