Saw an RE-20 for a great price on CL. I may grab it...just because. I've only really used the RE-20 on kick (which I quite like), and of course I know they're well regarded in broadcast for voice etc. What else do they do well? Electric Guitar? Percussion? I want to impulse buy it but don't know that I have the need. The studios I record at already have RE-20's, and there are 2-3 other dynamics that would probably serve me better in my personal studio...
What says the hive mind?

Mine really only gets used on kick, but I don't record a bass amp. If I did, it would likely get used there as well.

Bass amp, guitar amp, vocals, snare, snare under sometimes. I've also used it on French horn/horns with great results…

Bass cab, horns. It can be a little too much/maybe hard sounding on electric guitar in my experience but I could see it working on the right rig. I should revisit that it’s been years.

The RE20 is a fairly neutral sounding mic- nice lows... clear mids... soft highs... It's not a very exciting sounding mic. Tracks can sound a bit vanilla. But for that reason, the RE20 works on anything. I've used mine on bass, kick, vocals, percussion, guitar amp, even overheads. Also, I like the older ones better.

Vocals---a lot; kick; baritone sax; upright bass; bass cabinet (rare, anymore, but it works well).

Trade in value against a EV RE27! I've been using mine faithfully for 30 years!
Like a 20 without the clack, more headroom and higher output. A hi-fidelity version of it.
IMHO, the best LDD microphone EV ever made.

Thanks guys. Honestly it sounds like I don't have much use for it. Almost never record brass, or bass cab (going DI most times). BUT...Its a pretty great price, I think if its still available in a few days when I'm off work I'll grab it. I'd like to compare it to my 421 as they seem to be useful on all the same sources. And maybe I'll sell the one I like the least. Can't really justify having both.

I always found it helpful on loud, punk rock singers. Bad technique types were you just want to capture the emotion. Condensers would be all over the place with those types, but the RE/PL20 treated them well.

I prefer the 421 on electric guitar, but here's the thing: I have had both the 421 and the RE20 shine on (very) different vocalists.

The RE20 is less fussy, if anything.

Bass amp, vocals. Maybe a horn or even an acoustic guitar once in a while. Electric guitar can work also.
I'd probably pick up another RE20 before I'd pick up another MD421. But they're both sort of "special use" dynamics I guess. Also both very cool.
The worst thing about the RE20 is the cumbersome size of the thing, that's why I sold the one I had. But they do sound pretty schweet on the right thing.

if you want to replace the 421 Id look for a 441. Its much better sounding on guitars IMO then a 421 and can be used on lots of other things too well.
421 is handy for toms though on drums.

At least on those sources.

I do miss that MD441 I used to have, that was a sweet and special mic. I agree with you about the guitar amp, and many other sources as well. Another mic that's a bit too large than it should be, that sounds spectacular.

I've used here and there on other things and seen it even used on vocals with success. Pricey guy but worth it I think. Space age look too! haha Is big, but not un wieldy either.

Well, looks like it sold already. I'm kind of relieved actually. I need to be saving that money for a new computer and I really didnt need it, and wasn't wanting to replace anything. Thanks for the replies.

My RE20 sits around unused. Always seems to be a better mic. Never like it on kick or bass or guitar. Sometimes it is perfect on a floor tom and also nice on sax in a live band recording.

421 is handy for toms though on drums. Yes. For those who INSIST on using them cause they read it on the internet. For my money, there's a dozen better choices, as I hate the bleed sound using 421's. Back to the RE20, it's def a good utility mic to have around if you have a few hundred to spare.

But I have heard and gotten great results myself from 421s on toms. I think in general its an overrated mic riding on the coat tails on the OG 421s which were much better then the II's available today.
