Hi all. Just fyi those Auroras run very hot. Lynx tech support will tell you after 7 years or so the Auroras need to be recapped. Noise is there even if you don't hear it and will become more apparent over time. Nothing wrong with the Lynx stuff, just needs maintenance, not something you normally think about with ad/da but those are excellent boxes until the caps begin to introduce noise. Are we talking the (n) revision, or is this specific to the originals? (And if so - is this also something that hits the Hilo?)

Now that’s fascinating. My Aurora was easily the hottest piece of gear in my studio when I had it. You could literally burn yourself if you touched it for too long. I had a gut feeling this was slowly chipping away at its shelf life. Come to think of it, that would actually perfectly explain the mixed reviews from various people. Maybe all it needed was a recap! Might also explain my experience with the Apollo, too — that one also ran super hot, and I might be crazy, but I always felt like it didn’t sound too bad at first, but got worse over time.

enlav: I'm referring to the original Aurora. I'd contact Paul at Lynx for info on the (n) and Hilo but those don't run as hot so I'd imagine a longer period of run time before thinking about maintenance.
thaitkai: Anytime I see people describe the Aurora as noisy I immediately think user error or old unit = re-cap. They are anything but noisy. I'd imagine the same applies to older Apollos as well as others.

Fantastic singing. To me the difference is very noticeable. The Lavry just fits your voice and chain. Would love to have them. Though I think my Aurora (n) and Apollo x8p are working well enough(except for the DA of the Apollo. Still ew) I had the old Aurora 16. Bought it used and the caps went in a year. I think the N is better for sure. Thanks for sharing man!

This sort of thing is very interesting to me. I am a musician, songwriter as well as engineer and I've noticed that there are times where one of those hats tends to be the prevailing train of thought, which changes things. For instance, if I were to really, really try to hone in on my jazzbox guitar sound chain, being my main instrument and style these days, I could really start to hear which gear compliments that. However, through the lens of my engineering self, trying to think about sustaining a business and what features suit my setup for the dollars I have, some of those incredibly fine details aren't in my view.
For instance, I don't know if there are many people outside of yourself that could hear the issue you were having upon first listen while getting vocal sounds. My palette as a service provider has to be open as well and I can never get inside the head of a singer to hear what sound they specifically want, if they even are aware of such a thing. To put it another way, your experience much more granular. So it's interesting to see it serve you in such a detailed way as conversion.
And I do understand that great engineers can hear things I can't, so I'm not saying it isn't possible. It's very likely they would adjust... Just thinking out loud.

What part of the old Auroras generate the heat? Is it coming from the power supply? If so, I wonder if the power supply could be put in it's own case.

Those recordings are really interesting. Something about the sound of the Aurora reminds me of things being printed too hot though...
I normally just eyeball -20dbfs in most situations(and i'm often not really too precious about it). I find there's plenty of information at 24bit to gain up digitally in most practical applications when needed. When it comes to AD, quieter is ok, but louder can be less hifi to my ears, and so I err on the side of quiet.
I'd also expect the Lavry to probably behave better than the Auroras towards the louder end of things.
Having said that: yes! absolutely! more expensiver sounds betterer. Who'd have thunk...

Thanks friend! I appreciate you listening and I agree with everything you wrote here. This is definitely in that "last 10%" category where no sane person would ever care. I absolutely suffer from Lead Singer Syndrome, so to me, it feels like a quantum leap. But if I put my ego aside, I can admit that most people I know wouldn't hear a difference.

I would assume so — when I had mine, it was definitely hottest near the PSU. Those recordings are really interesting. That was definitely my first inclination when I had the Aurora. Originally, I was using an M149, which is a crazy high output mic, so I assumed I was just hitting something a little too hard. But I tried literally every gain setting imaginable, including setting the mic pre as low as it could go and using a friggin -20dB inline pad! I even tried skipping the mic pre altogether and just going directly into the line input — same problem. It was a really bizarre issue and really eye-opening when it comes to the impact converters can have.

Lynx has a difference converter chip for every pair of stereo channels man just like Prism and Burl. They do not mess around at all with inferior multichannel chips or split the output of an ESS chip. Unlike RME, UAD, MOTU, and Apogee’s multichannel cards and products. The Aurora and Aurora N are packed to the brim. The Hilo and Aurora N have their sounds but are not compromised.

Lavry Black and Blue are noticeably more colored than the recent Lynx stuff. OG Aurora was not big on, but the Hilo and Aurora N do not really lie even if they change the bass and treble timbre slightly. There’s no such thing as a perfectly transparent converter. I’ve heard - lot of high end stuff and you’re better off getting something that’s mostly transparent (loopbacks always change the sound imo, which is part of the argument against a hybrid mix or mastering approach) you like the sound off that make things sound better IMO. Unfortunate most multichannel pro audio converters are heavily compromised vs their stereo cousins. The MOTUs and Apogee Quartet and Element are just low detail and more colored than the Symphonies. The OG Aurora sucked vs the Hilo. RME multichannel DA is totally wtf in the treble vs the ADI-2.

possibly somewhat related: I also have a whole bunch of suspicion regarding impedences and circuit loading and all those things I don't really know enough about.
Does the sound of converters change depending on the output termination or topography of the last piece of gear upstream? Are there any measurable or hear-able differences between going 600 ohm terminated pultec into a converter VS non-terminated pultec VS a chip based ssl or something... This is something I've never quite got my head around and I have my superstitions..
