Pueblo Audio can you please tell us about the benefits of using external phantom power supplies in general?

Here's another tiny detail. Phantom power is 48 V at no more than 5 milliamps of EDIT: current. I think that's about a quarter watt of power. So in kilowatt hours, that's not a ton of "juice" being spent, you can even power them with batteries. Your computer is much more of an environmental energy hog than even a dozen microphones, I would guess.
Not sure how relevant this is to the discussion, I just find it interesting that it's a relatively small amount of power.
I think BMW is one of the only cars I've had dreams about, 3 series, and 2002. There have been some in the family for a long time. Used to drive a 735i in high school, I guess I didn't really appreciate the situation until much later, that was a sweet ride. But yes, phantom power, power cycling.

I have owned every major German brand, but I have to say going from the Merc/ AMG to the BMW X5 to the Tesla the X5 had so many stupid cheap engineering choices that I lost a lot of respect for the ultimate driving machine alone the way. The peak modern BMW, to me, is the M 235. Big engine in a little car. Old school. I've had 7 BMW's? IMO Kia make better cars nowadays for less $$$'s. Also the M140i was the most fun, 340HP RWD econobox sized lightening..

? Is it smart to use a clean external phantom PSU and which one would you recommend? I need four mics running constantly. Maybe look into this one from Coil Audio? coilaudio.com/cp448.html

SNIP the USA has always made great mics, albeit often on a different design path from Germany. [/div][/quote] The most breathtaking recordings I've heard were orchestral recordings made in the USA in the 1940s, made entirely with RCA ribbon mics, mostly 44s.

10,000 degrees? R.U.Sirus? They don't run at 10,000 degrees. They'd melt. If they run excessively hot, allow me to recommend a new invention. We call it the fan, and thety're available in sizes appropriate for rack gear. Yes, you're backwards on that, too. If stuff runs way too hot in your 500 rack, it's the designer's problem. Some designers cram, too much stuff into too small a space in a format intended for CONSOLE MODULES, not what it's been appropriated for. I don't use 500 stuff for that reason - there's no consistancy or quality control across rack manufacturers, let alone module designers, and I don't beta test for free. I do own SCAMP racks and some Allison moduilar stuff, but since those were proprietary they were subject to uniform quality control. Yes, there are many great 500 format modules and designers. But the field itself is the Wild West.
I might have exaggerated by a few thousand degrees. That's called hyperbole like, "I've told you a million times..." C'mon, johneppstein, you make one of the best comments in a thread and then miss that one? Heehehehe

Pueblo Audio can you please tell us about the benefits of using external phantom power supplies in general? The ability to take it completely out of circuit when not needed.

Russia's main problem in electronics is and always has been quality control. Their communist philosophy unfortunately did not provide for great quality control.
And the USA has always made great mics, albeit often on a different design path from Germany.
Putin hates Germany and Octava is a rudimentary part of the past communistic state companies. It should not be a big deal to invent a better QC... I read that they get it with the capsules but they fail on the electronic parts. Doesn’t makes sense to me. I dunno. I don't see a lot of praise for them on higher end sites....

Pueblo Audio can you please tell us about the benefits of using external phantom power supplies in general? It's more reliable. Many consoles don't really hve adequate current to power a lot of phantom mics. Some phantom mics have degraded performance if not given adequate power.

Then it's about to catch a good one overall with the last year I had to try 6 one's till I liked one compared to the Neumanns....
