A lot of young people don't even use gear, they stay in the box. Generational change, maybe. As outboard gear trends toward obsolescence, there's less of a market, less turnover.

Replace "good times" with "used gear" and sing along!

The shift from eBay to Reverb seemed like a few years ago back when Reverb was taking a smaller cut of each sale but now they are charging what eBay does. So that's why I was wondering if things shifted to some other place that I'm unaware of. Tried to explain this to a guy who had an amp I was shopping listed on Reverb and CL. Contacted via CL, asked what was the best he could do considering the cut Reverb was going to take if he sold it, and was also going to be a local pickup, so he'd save on shipping as well (Reverb now digs in there too) and he didn't get it. Thought I was low-balling him. Certainly will understand my point if he sells it though. Reverb fees have gone way up.

The used market is all wonky right now. Smh. It’s amazing how many pieces I see going for nearly the same price as they go for new.

My guess I think gear isn't trading hands as much these days on eBay / Reverb partially because of the new tax laws. You really cant just try stuff out anymore and sell it if you don't like it, or you will already be out a few hundred bucks on taxes, before you even include the seller's fees/shipping/etc......better to do that type of thing on the craiglist/facebook marketplace...although for some reason I still dont really understand facebook marketplace...its new to me. Wish more trading happened on Forums like RGO!

I think the taxes on reverb and such are definitely part of it. Facebook market place is a little sketchy in my opinion. There are no real protections if products fail or don’t work. I also think people are struggling without much performance work, so they don’t have the money to upgrade and are simply using what they have at the moment. I used to get a lot of used gear on Guitar Center’s used page, but they have been practically empty since the pandemic started.

I sold 4 pieces on reverb a few weeks the charges to me never stopped. a couple of peeps commented my prices were good so I think reverb buyers are already acclimatized to higher prices due to Reverb’s ridiculous fees.

Every musician is suddenly recording, every reporter is now a podcaster, everybody is working from going through all the sites looking for their dream gear. It’s still out there you just have to bite really fast or it’s gone.

I think they do but the shipping prices are usually extremely bloated, from what I remember. Like $100 shipping for a small piece of gear.

The Boston store is dope. I still have a 1985 marshall 2x12 square silver jubilee cab i got from them for 150 bucks - best sounding cab I own! We have a store around here though near DC called Atomic Music, which is literally the best used gear store on the planet, at least for the guitar player.

They let me crank up a JCM800 and a Plexi in the back room. I had never heard those amps before. I was blown away and I'll never forget that. I was surprised to learn that I'm more of a JCM800 person than a Plexi person, based on my preconceived notions being wrong.

The Boston store is dope. Oh you should haven seen Hi Tech consignments, back in the 80’s in Minneapolis before they were bought out by the guys from play it again sports and disc go round. It was affordable pro audio heaven. Plus they would by close outs by the pallet.

Atomic Music is great.
The upside is the swing around of this gear boom might be great. The problem is it’s not professional musicians buying all this used and new gear so it might not end up back on the market when the free government money runs out, people have to get back to work or face eviction, and have to face the music that their covid home recordings are far from a professional studio

Some of the prices are funny. Porta studios in whatever condition for 400 dollars when you can’t even get the pro cassette tapes for them right now. Then again people will pay 3000 bucks for a working 388...
