Well, here ya go. Mike Campbell could have any mic in the world, but he's using an SM7B and a ribbon for vocals. Not sure which ribbon it is though..

The RCA 77 is kinda the u87 of old ribbon mics, in multiple ways.

Wouldn't mind having either one of those mics. I just haven't been able to justify getting an SM7B. I have a couple of good mics and might not use the SM7B except for occasional podcasts. If i get a podcast or voice-over job that pays anything, I'll get one just to have it. Spending $300--$350 on an SM7B is hard for me to do when I can use some other things like an acoustic for Nashville tuning or a main electric guitar.
I had to sell my beauties to pay med bills and only have one cheap Squire electric at the moment. I can borrow so many great guitars from a good friend so I'm OK for tracking, but I'll look at a Les Paul or an American Tele as soon as I start making money again. Loss of work from Covid-19's kicked my ass here.

*Cough AGKd100e Cough.* Right there with you! You won't regret it. Even if you do, you'll get you $67 back if you decide to not use it. I could use a fourth... Shhh we keep quiet about AKG D100/1000/1200 family, oh wait I have 5 of each you can shout about from the roof tops. I gotta look into those other models.

I’m still trying to figure out the difference! Every time I think I found a difference I realize it’s sample to sample variations! They are just so cheap and well built !

Eric, I bought another backup/mint AKG D790 for around $45, before I ever started ballyhooing about that model online! As always wishing you well MJB, on all endeavors. I sold my EV/ (US made) Shure "vintage microphone collection" about 5 years ago, so I can relate. 2 EV 666's/RE 15 & 16/Shure Unidyne III 56/546/57 & 548 Unidyne IV to be exact. Chris

I was just at friends studio and he played me a pop track he was working on. It had a nice sounding pop female vocal. I asked him what mic it was thinking it might be his Upton 251 or something like that and he said it was an SM7b into a vintage 1073 sung in the control room.

I put up a few really nice condensers and my SM7b. I had her sing a verse/chorus through each, then played them back in random order for her so she didn't have bias. She picked the SM7 and she was 100% correct that it was the best sounding one of the bunch for what we were doing. I seriously have almost never even considered dropping serious coin on an LDC, because my SM7 or 441 will do the job every time. Not saying that I don't love using the Tele 251 my buddy has when I can, but I'm never like "I need it".

I often use a vintage AKG D-224-E on woodwinds (various saxes mostly) instead of an LDC or SDC. Beautiful in that application. I posit that the D-224 may be one of the greatest overlooked or unknown dynamics in the history of ever.

The 251 and the SM7B are my own personal best vocal mics of all time, for my voice, from anything I've owned. I don't have a "real" 251 it's one I cobbled together myself. Desert island stuff, really. I think any singer could find those one or two mics and stop the search right there, whatever the mics end up being.

The spot I use that has the 251 also has a U47, but I have not dug it at all as a vocal mic the few times I've tried it. I suspect maybe it's one of those "not as good" ones you hear about. It just sounds off to me. I can't really say definitively what it is. I digress, but I find it interesting.

Unfortunately, it is also quite fragile and it cannot be repaired once broken. I have a non-working D224, as well as a D202, and a D19c.

They are just so cheap and well built ! Looking at the 1200 and the grill is different than the 1000. The 1200 has what looks like a traditional pre-made mesh. The 1000 has these fused pellets that are said to give a very unique diffusion. The Undertone consoles have a similar finish for a similar reason. I can't remember what the process is called.

Hi LPE, thanks for asking. I just listened to it, in terms of singing through it. Plus my limited sonic understanding, was even more limited than now! I thought it was somewhat fuller/richer sounding, than the later RE20. (Meaning I like the 666 a bit more) Self recording, IMHO prefer 441/M88/SM7 & EV 635a (some songs) over RE20/666. There are quite a few RGO-ers here who'd out perform me self recording, on a U47, versus them recording me on a 57! Chris

The 666 has a woodier/fatter low mid, no bottom. RE20 has a hair more extreme bottom but sounds thinner overall. One 666 on bass amp and other on kick is definitely a thing you'd recognize, sometimes I'll do that to bring a certain era vibe to the bottom.
