THE BIG ONES. What's your favorite for supporting large microphones like an RCA44 or a pair of LDCs and for far reach extensions?
Atlas? K&M? Latchlake? Ultimate Support? Others?

I have Atlas in my studio. I never worry about them slipping or falling. I honestly picked them over the others for the kind of retro aesthetic. I’m sure the Latch Lake are really high quality but I’ve never tried them. The Ultimate Support stands feel a little more light weight but they seem perfectly capable of handling any mics. A friend has some and I’ve never heard any complaints.

I can’t recommend the Ultimate one. I know some others have had good luck with theirs, but I really don’t like mine. It’s the only “big stand” that I’ve actually had topple over on me. Took my Soyuz 019 down and hit a guitar. I think the center of gravity is too high. I also think the plastic threads are too flimsy.

Atlas, Latchlake, didn’t Triad start making a Starbird again?

I have a few of the big OnStage boom stands with the large counterweight and weighted base. I've had them for years; no problems. The clutches are geared, so they never droop or sag, either. Reasonably priced; I think around $150. maybe? This one: on-stage.com/products/view/12624Boomy regards, -09

I know it's not a favorable brand, but I've used a couple different brands at other studios over the years and I ended up buying a couple On-Stage brand ones for my studio and haven't really noticed a difference in usage. It's a stand.. What I like about them is that the weighted base is between the wheels, not on top of them. I also like that all pivots are toothed, not rubber or pinch locked. The main shaft extensions are clamped with external "pipe clamp" type locks, not the internal twisty kind that always seem to break or stay loose unless you crank them down. They're beasts and they're relatively cheap. I bought mine maybe 10 years ago so I don't know if they're still made as heavy duty. www.ebay.com/itm/On-Stage-Stands-SMS7650-Hex-Base-Studio-Boom-Microphone-Stand/174096104480?epid=1201724116&hash=item2888efbc20:g:HtMAAOSwdNleh20YBut if you look around you might be able to find them cheaper. I know I didn't pay nearly full price, but I'm not seeing deals on them right now.

I thought the On-Stage I've used were good.

Keep in mind the cheap way to get bigger and taller stands is to use lighting stands and adapters. C-stands, Manfrotto products, etc.

Latch Lake are awesome stands. Heavy duty, and the latch mechanism hold your mic exactly where you want it, with no play.

I love the latch lake stands. More than any of the others listed in here at least.
Never gotten on with Atlas for some reason. The ends always bother me, or maybe it was just the ones at the places I've been?
On stage is okay same with Ulitmate.
The Latch lakes will last the rest of your life though.

Atlas, Latchlake, didn’t Triad start making a Starbird again? Yup They are making the Starbird! On Stage and new Atlas are great, till they aren’t and you realize a Latchlake really isn’t that big of an investment to protect your favorite mic.

My RCA 44’s and my U47’s have a “Latch Lake only” policy here... The big On Stage booms are just “ok”. (No swivel on the little drop down arm, some of the nuts that hold the adjustment clamps have stripped, and the base still needs a sandbag to be truly safe. Bigger footprint at the base as well.)

I like my On Stage stands like the ones linked above. I have some Ultimates that I use to drape packing blankets over.
The Latch Lake's are a Ferrari of big stands.

Is it sturdy enough for a big LDC (something u47-ish in size/weight)?

Well, all this chatter made me want a new Latch Lake, so I got me one. I may buy some more and use the pair of Ultimates for hanging towels on the deck after a dip in the pool.
I never got on all that well with the Atlas units either, but my Large Format K&Ms ain't going anywhere

I just ordered a Latch Lake 1100. It will be really nice to have a microphone stand that I don't have to even think about anymore.

Great, one more thing to obsess and GAS about and eventually buy! Just what my corona-starved wallet needed. Reading this forum is my most expensive activity by far.

THE BIG ONES. What's your favorite for supporting large microphones like an RCA44 or a pair of LDCs and for far reach extensions? Atlas? K&M? Latchlake? Ultimate Support? Others? Latchlake, by a very wide margin. They never slip, which can be a problem with my big old Atlas stands.
Ultimate Support are kinda junk, IMO. I believe I have one of those and never use it for anything, not even laundry.

awesome! Thanks, Tony! Really makes me want to get one. I have a 2200. It is F-ing INCREDIBLE!
Their Xtra Booms are also really cool. You can hang one or two more booms off most any stand!

Atlas, Latchlake, didn’t Triad start making a Starbird again? Is it a real Starbird with the little wheel on the butt to remotely adjust the position of the microphone?
