Well I finally went ahead and picked up a pair of diyre eq5’s. In the end I would have loved the Audioscapes, but with the impending end of civilization, work has slowed, and I just didn’t feel like waiting any longer. I’m gonna grab a 2 slot horizontal rack to pop them in, and I’ll be good to go. I got them prebuilt with the vintage option for under what the kits would have cost me! Any suggestions for racks? There’s the Bento, the older A Designs, anything else? I don’t want a 3 slot chassis cause then I’m going to want to fill it lol. Thanks to everyone who chimed in here. It was all really helpful! Any follow-up on how this worked out?

Any follow-up on how this worked out? Loved the eq5’s. Did a few mixes through them that came out really great. Ended up picking up a lot of mix work over quarantine and found that I just didn’t enjoy the time spent running mixes through them, and recalling settings. Ive actually sold all my outboard and am now completely in the box!

Do you have a fav pultec plug ? Been using UAD forever, but even though it’s not exactly a Pultec, I loooove the Fuse Audio VQP’s. Those are almost always on my mix bus.

The best bargain in the Pultec family are the solid state kits, play with the opamp and transformers to taste.

Bettermaker passive stereo eq is interesting, wonder how it sounds compared to something like Audioscape EQP1A

Intriguing - I must explore my VQP-258A more! Just totted up that I have seven Pultec-syle EQ plugins in my collection, yet invariably I reach for the freeware SonEQFree because it's so easy to use as well as sounding good (the drive is excellent as well): sonimus.com/products/soneqFor instance, Lindell Audio PEX-500 sounds great but I find its interface confusing, PSP NobleQ sounds good but there's lot of aliasing if you enable its valve option for some colour, NI/Softube Enhanced EQ is good but a bit basic (no HF boost option). Just tried it and you're right nick - +4dB 100Hz and +4dB 3kHz (with Trim set to -3.9dB to gain compensate) gives a beautifully subtle increase in bottom end weight (around +0.5dB centred on 50Hz) plus an even tinier boost at around 2.5kHz
Now created four subtle presets for the VQP-258A, and will definitely be trying these on the stereo bus!

Retro 2A3 and A-Designs EM-PEQ pair here. Both amazing! I currently have the 2A3 dedicated to kick and snare and EM-PEQ to drum buss. 2A3 is amazing on the stereo buss for an acoustic production. I really need to try them on more sources! Have you tried the EM-PEQ on a vocal yet? Is there much difference between the 500 series and the rack mount?

The Pulse re-issues sound awesome from shoot out tests... If only they weren't so expensive, dang... over 8k for a pair of tube EQP-1As and the prices seem to be going up???

On vocal shootouts particularly sound awesome. Wonder if anyone with direct experience with the tube EQP-1A's recommends something similar and a bit more affordable.

- the AudioScape EQP's. I expected big things, and they delivered. Especially in rack size....(haha!! Sorry Chris. LOL). But they are certainly the most "pristine" and flexible of the bunch even if they take up 6RU in my rack. (But it's a BEAUTIFUL 6RU!!!!). These are no doubt the ones that guys who only have ONE set should go for. Stams? Not for me, no thanks. DIYRE's? Not flexible enough. Pulse? Too much money for a stinking Pultec. == if only they were smaller in rack size, ack. Did you A/B these with the Pulse ones? It sounds like these are the ones you most recommend then from hearing them all? So there you go. Honestly - given ONLY "one or the other", I'd take the Silver Bullet EQ for Presence, and Air, and Big Bottom Sub over any Pultec. That's just my personal preference. I DO tend to resonate with BAX style EQ's on the top and bottom - sub and air. == Have you heard the Silver Bullet against a Dangerous BAX EQ? == Thanks Dr. Bill!

I found the results of this video kind of surprising. The Audio Scape EQP1 definitely gets the job done, but sounds different than the vintage unit. I'm aware that there are many variables to why, but I thought I'd share so others could hear it and discuss. Thanks for posting this... shoot... The Pulse sounded close to the vintage to me (but the price is crazy)... but The Audio Scape doesn't do that magical thing I hear in the Pulse and original Pultec... dang, I wish it did...

I'd still love to hear a shootout between the Tegeler and a Pulse; vintage or reissue. I know Tegeler doesn't follow the exact schematic of the Pulse, but everything I've heard of it sounds good. I'm often disappointed with the lack of low end on some of these other brands. The Gainlab Empress really disappointed me when I finally heard them side by side. The video above bothers me because it's poorly done and I can't see what he's doing in regards to settings, and where he starts. The end results are pretty close.
It's in German, but you can hear clips of the Gainlab Empress vs the Pulse here:

Been abusing the VQPs in mixes for a while. I love the various band steps leading to crazy results and clean but still vibey sound. I just discovered boost at 100 and 15k shelves is a nice upper mid dip, tightened low end, and raised volume.
