Also haven't used the Audioscape pultec, but having had recent experience with the D-Comp, V-Comp and Opto compressors he makes, I would not hesitate for one second to grab one of his pultecs. I knew from the word on the street that they make quality stuff, but I was seriously blown the fuck away when I got my hands on them.

Are you the guy that just listed one for sale on reverb yesterday? 😂😂 Umm nope, def not me lol. I have a pair of EQP1As upgraded, and Stamchild and two 1073EQs ... never letting my stam stuff go! Off topic, but do you remember the date you preordered? I'd like to gauge my place in line. Having Stam expenses that could come at anytime is giving me a little anxiety...

I was first day on both the pultec and the stamchild ... I think if you email support they can let you know approx. and its gotten much better at predicting. Not here to derail about stam though eek, everyone knows the deal haha. I dont mind the wait and I love the gear so it worked out! Understand waiting isn't for everyone haha
its just a great time to be recording with all kinds of options to get these classic units...
back to OP there is a big thread on some other forum that talks about upgrading the Klarks, apparently its quite the upgrade to the sound and might get you where you want to be. But It seems like the audioscape might be the best choice next time they come up

If you are relying on the Sweetwater shootout and are interested in the KT EQP-KT, keep in mind that sweetwater disadvantaged that unit by putting it 2 or 3 decibels below the other contenders.
I sold my EQP-KT because I don't like the 'B' brand build quality. Plastic shaft pots, I'm out.
It sounded pretty wonderful but the high end wasn't that great. The low end was pretty great. Just my experience.
I don't like the UAD plugin for some reason. I prefer the Noise Ash Rule Tec Heritage Pro. Even though this thread is about hardware I had to mention it.
My bucket list plan is to build one of the AML kits and see how it performs. I'm not interested in Warm Audio at all, personally. Below that all you got is KT. And the DIY Recording ones I would love to build also, even though they are solid state.
The Lindell PEX-500 are pretty decent too. I'm not really clear on why I sold them. One reason was the control labels are literally impossible to read. I'd rather have a "high end DIY" for the same money like a DIY REC or AML.

If you do diy there is a new really good kit developed vin europe, but for the convenience and quality I’d do Audioscape, with out a second thought.

I own the DIYRE 500 Pultec's with CAPI Litz transformers and Rogue5 OpAmps, the KT EQP's, the AudioScape EQP's. In PAIRS. I've also got several plugin EQP's including the Rule Tec Heritage Pro version. They are all different, and all have a place in the racks and sessions. First, I'm really not sure if I am a Pultec guy or not. I never gravitated to them when starting out years ago, and employing them now is a bit of a coin toss for me. They either work for me, or they don't. I fully admit to being a renegade with EQ in comparison to many guys, And what works or doesn't work for me often goes against the grain (right Jeff? . And when the Pultec's don't work, something like an API 550 or Miad 4040 or the Silver Bullet Sub/Air WORKS really great for me! So.....I think we are all looking for something different, and my needs and preferences might not be what a dyed in the wool Pultec fan is looking for. All that said, here's some thoughts on all of them : - The DIYRE 500 Pultec. SPACE! I love that these have so much goodness in such a small space. They are the least flexible of the lot though, but they are clean, a tad vibey, and they can work really well - especially in subtle applications. - the KT's. I figured these might go when I got the AS EQP's, but nope. They are staying. First, HUGE props to KT for not going 3 spaces. I don't know why in 2020 EQP's almost always come in 3 spaces. Well, actually, I do (historic reasons) but I HATE using 6RU in my uber valuable rack space for 2 channels of EQ. So, the KT wins here. Big. As for sonics, I really like em. They are not pristine, but they are often more "obvious" than the others, and I don't use them for hyper-critical applications. I use em to bring some analog vibe into my digital hybrid approach mixes. The MAIN #1 reason they stay - is the extended LF frequencies - that none of the others have, and that makes them a huge benefit for me. The 800Hz - and sometimes the 400-Hz - settings get used constantly for thin, digitalized electric guitars that get cut by others and sent to me. In those types of applications, they are a lifesaver, and nothing else I have can quite warm those up like the KT does. Maybe the Manley VariMu-Mu if I push it hard, but I have need of that in other places. - the AudioScape EQP's. I expected big things, and they delivered. Especially in rack size....(haha!! Sorry Chris. LOL). But they are certainly the most "pristine" and flexible of the bunch even if they take up 6RU in my rack. (But it's a BEAUTIFUL 6RU!!!!). These are no doubt the ones that guys who only have ONE set should go for. Stams? Not for me, no thanks. DIYRE's? Not flexible enough. Pulse? Too much money for a stinking Pultec. Same with vintage. KT's? Not going on my MIX or MASTERING buss, sorry. Ruletec - same. The AS Pultec's are the best hardware Pultec's that are realistically priced IMO. And a HUGE, GIGANTIC, UBER fantastic shout out for Chris and the way he takes care of his customers whenever they have a need. Top notch there!!- the Rule Tec. Surprisingly, this plug is a winner for me. It's more "obvious" than any of the others, and I like the midrange and filters on the top/bottom. For a plugin, it's surprisingly good. And often wins over the other suspects simply BECAUSE of it's obvious character and vibey / size feel. So there you go. Honestly - given ONLY "one or the other", I'd take the Silver Bullet EQ for Presence, and Air, and Big Bottom Sub over any Pultec. That's just my personal preference. I DO tend to resonate with BAX style EQ's on the top and bottom - sub and air. For all around CARVING and SWEETNESS, the Miad 4040's are very hard to beat. And again, choosing one or the other, I'd probably go with the Miad's due to their very different architecture as compared to Pultec's in general. BUT - there IS a place for the Pultec "thang" in most studio's, and the AS versions are pretty tough to beat for that. Priced amazingly, and with a REAL company that believes in putting it's customers first - even when it costs them $$. I cannot say enough good things about how I've been treated / taken care of by Chris and the AS gang. So...I'm still wondering if I'm a Pultec guy, but I like all of em enough to hold rack space open for them, and use them frequently. Hope that helps. .......so maybe I AM a Pultec guy?? Haha!! Ask me in 20 years. LOL

I'm glad to hear you like the Noise Ash dr bill. I agree with you it's very colored. But in my mind that's sort of how a pultec 'should' be? ( ?) I've never touched a real, old one.

No one has commented on the A Designs....any experience/thoughts in comparison to something like the Audioscapes? I have the A Designs EMPEQ. Used to have a pair but did not use them that much on stereo sources. So I sold one of them. I absolutely love them on bass guitar, it’s always on bass in my studio. It’s quite different from the Audioscape or tube pultecs, but it sounds great and functions in the same way with the same type of controls. The Audioscape is very smooth and sweet. The A Designs is solid state so there’s a difference in sound right away because of that. Both great units but different

For hardware I’ve used the Warms & the Retro 2A3. At the time I was looking for a pair for the 2 Buss. The Warms were just ok, nothing special though to me. The Retro was really sweet but a bit too much color for what I was looking for on the 2 Buss. I almost went the Pulse route but never could bring myself to pull the trigger at that price point. I’m going to have to check out the AudioScapes sometime soon.
For plug ins, I really like the Acustica Purple bundle.
