This is pretty neat. This album was a pretty big one when I was in my formative years. It's night and day. The new version is really not up my alley at all. Super hyped, scooped, more fatiguing. So many more audible artifacts in the vocals (they're also too loud). Original has a raw quality to it. Nice and dark so it lends itself to higher volume listening. Kind of shocking to hear it now, given todays standards of rock production. Seems more like it's just a great capture balanced by volume moves, whereas the new one has that hyper-reality thing going on. I think this comparison demonstrates that pretty clearly. Anyways, thought I'd share. It's an interesting listening experiment. monster25.remhq.com/player/

I think the original mix is not great either... The remix has more low end.... is a bit hyped....too much saturation and it sounds like mixed with too many plug ins in the strips...

It's crazy how different the guitars sound.

I thought I'd read that some unused tracks were used for the remixes, could be a different amp we've never heard.

I thought it was interesting they chose to go mono on one of the remix songs where the original was stereo.

It's crazy how different the guitars sound. I like the guitars in the original so much more. The guitar tone was always one of my favorite things on Monster.

It will be of no shock to anyone that I like the new mix better.

Yeah - over all, I like the new ones better...although I thought they did scoop the guitars too much...

Interesting.....Yeh I think new ones sounds decent, but I agree a little too scooped and maybe didn't need any major high boost. I think cutting the difference between the 2 mixes maybe would have been best.

took a listen to 'Kenneth', missing something for me and not just the omitted distinctive tremelo guitar on the chorus.

Overall I like the lo-fi quality of the original.
Apart from that, the problems I have with the remix are especially the vocals. Too loud and not as glued to the song. The guitars are thinner too. And the extended top end is not to my taste.
At the same time, in some songs, the original mix had problems too.

I have one criteria for an REM mix - can I understand the lyrics?
Yes - I don't like this mix.
No - I like this mix.
C'mon, don't be a hater. Murmur and Fables are still top o' the pile around here.
Cat food!! (cat- a-pult)!!

I think this all goes to show..... As long as you don't severely screw up a mix, the music will speak for itself. Less is probably more.
While the trend of production has gotten much more slick in 2019 and everything is sounding more 'perfect' and refined, I don't think that necessarily is making for better music.

If you've heard the early unreleased demo's/record (made for A&M?) with CLEAR vocals, it's funny to consider. I understand that's why they rejected that approach.

And yeah, for me all the early ones are canonical, wouldn’t change anything about their imperfections.

Preface: wife loves REM....she was a girlfriend at the time--I hated this album SO much. Why? Gone was all the lovely strings/acoustic piano and such from Automatic.....and they were "back" to college garage rock"--but, Kenneth in particular--I thought "what a great melodic hook--how did that guitar get by ANYONE's QC? Too loud and "nosey"--either of those work fine for me--it can be loud with a more full range(ish) sound....it can be nosey and tucked up in the mix....but, BOTH? Super loud AND nosy? Yuck. So fast forward....is that comparison the original CD master? Or a louder maker master OR those mixes currently available? Either way--I think they went a long way for what could be won in a few moves: Find the nosy 400-800hz, GENTLY pull some of it and turn those guitar VOLUME DOWN. Instead, it sounds like they have like 20DB notices so they don't have to "turn it down"...the vocal, drums and bass sound better in the new one....but, why did they have to make the guitar sound that bad? I mean--it was bad to start with in it's extreme "sm7 on cranked AC30 bass cut" way....but, that's just a raw track that could've been shaped into better--not it sounds like they've decided to reinvent the sound of that guitar into some kind of "odd for REM" Mesa Boogie Modeling Amp version....so--they got it out of the way of the rest, but.... #armchairEngineeringIsFun #peanutGallerySaysWhat The last person you'd want engineering an REM record is me. But, I figured I'd throw this in if only to highlight WHY they made that choice....and that there ARE alternatives that IMO wouldn't sound as weird. But, I don't know that they weren't mandated to make it sound "very different". You know? As a side note: can I get Counting Crows catalog after the first one "unmastered"....? I mean--I get it--buy the vinyl....but, the big fan of CC in the house is the wife--and I like them fine (compared to REM) but starting with #2 they mastered SO loudly....and honestly--it's just not appropriate in lite folky navel gazing music. I got a copy of Recovering the Satellites mastered by Mobile Fidelity....THAT....sounds like the slightly more rocking follow up to the first record....which I mention because I saw that as a "not big fan" the same push to make all they music more "grungy" in the 90s. In retrospect, I think that's why Automatic For the People and August and Everything After stand up better and I'd bet have made them a SHIT TON more money in licensing over 30 years....anyway....I only saw the one....I'm sure Ms Pop has the original CD if we need to compare the original masters. I have the 24/48 of Automatic--she couldn't care less, but, I swiped her "made from CD" whatever compressed file for the 24/48 MP4....makes MY appreciation of it better when she plays it.

Typical me totally on the fence and never making a decision.... I like things about both.
I think I prefer the vocal sound of the remix, but the snarl of the guitars in the original. *shrugs*

On a note if no one saw, the original mixer did the remix.

Cat food!! (cat- a-pult)!! Cat food!! Cat food!! (cat- a-pult)!! Cat Food! I haven’t made it farther, but this is the correct answer. Lol. Seriously, REM was a HUGE influence on me. Even more so than I realize - obviously I mean that melodically, because I only understood about nine words Stipe sang. Didn’t matter though. They were an obsession for me in high School. I can’t believe I haven’t proclaimed my REM love in this thread until now...but it started to wane with this album. It was when I was in college and it was after they were way far mainstream...I was a fan, but it was dead a bit to me. Anyway, holy shit. Old rem is so good.
