Can't we all just get along??? Everybody hurts. Sometimes.

Haven’t found a moment to listen yet but I can’t believe they took away the tremolo guitar part (from what I’ve read here)

There's two paths here that don't necessarily agree, mixer's choice:
1) try to improve on or otherwise fix things you wish you'd done 2) reinterpret

Scott Litt talks about dropping the Tremelo guitar from the chorus on the link below (1 minute in).

I feel like if a guitar part is so iconic that the producer actually feels the need to explain it's absence, it should probably just be left alone. haha.

I'm sure that kind of thing is going to piss off some fans. They'll probably just stick to the record they already love anyway. That's often been my reaction to these "remixes" or "remasters" sometimes different is not better. It's just a money grab anyway, who really cares.

I can only think of 2 instances where a remix/remaster/anniversary thing actually was better. Brendan O'Brien's remix of "Ten" and Albini's remix of "In Utero".

OK, so it's a sample, and the sample may not exist anymore. Might have to be recreated, and it'll never sound the same. Yeah, you could go nuts with RX7 and carve it out maybe.

Took a listen at the online player. Wow. I can only define this as "ill-advised". I think the raw, dark sound of that album was a big part of its appeal, and it was also kind of a sonic statement from R.E.M. The remixed "Freq" guitars sound horrible to me, and it makes no sense to have such an upfront vocal on any of these songs. Oh and it's already on Spotify. "Strange Currencies" makes no sense at all, as a mix. I really don't get it.

Makes me think of dark lighting versus the fluorescent lights at Walmart. Also reminds me of my old treble alarm clock in my high school years.

One example stands out to me: I Don't Sleep, I Dream
I have an original CD from 1994. It's not as loud as the remaster or new remix, but not nearly as harsh either. Listen to the remaster or remix first (a min is all it takes), then put on the original version and crank it up.
The original has so much more depth, is not harsh or fatiguing, and has a more well-rounded bottom end.....it’s just a better product hands down in my opinion.
Remaster - Louder, brighter. lead vocal has an edge I do not like.
Remix - half as "wide", missing low-end, strange mix. Vocal too fwd for an REM tune.

Wow. They effectively destroyed the whole album. Bang & Blame sounds like sh!t
I am in no way an REM fan. I can't stand most of their stuff, but I like Monster and Life's Rich Pageant. Let's hope they at least leave that one alone...

Let's hope they at least leave that one alone... Life's Rich Pageant was an earlier album, so the 25th anniversary has been out a few years. I'm a huge R.E.M. fan and they kind of got me into playing guitar. Specifically this album. The 2CD lift top box contains the original album digitally remastered. Disc 2 contains "The Athens Demos," 19 previously unreleased tracks recorded by the band before the final studio sessions. I've not heard it, but there are people who complain that the remaster makes it way too hot. I think that's a real risk for all the albums that came out before the loudness wars. It just won't sound the same. I actually like the re-takes on Beatles Sgt. Pepper and White Album, but I've heard others say they hate it. When I've heard older material that was mono redone in stereo it never feels right to me.

I've been listening to the Beatles latest remixes a lot lately, very darn good.

Life's Rich Pageant was an earlier album, so the 25th anniversary has been out a few years. Yes, this is true. But there are many more anniversaries coming up... I actually like the re-takes on Beatles Sgt. Pepper and White Album, but I've heard others say they hate it. Me too. I really like the Beatles ones. I feel the did it just right. Especially Abbey Road.

I can technically understand that the new mix sounds "better". Clearer vocals, slightly tamed electric guitar. The thing is, the flaws and eccentricities of albums done the way the original was done contain the original spirit of the band at that time. A remix analyzes it and makes "corrections". Our ears learn to listen through "bad mixes", and eventually learn to love them. Case in point, the first Roxy Music album. The mix is terrible, I much preferred the sound of the 2nd album, but I played the grooves off of the first one too. It was like a photo of a beautiful mess. Basically, I don't like most remixes. Of course there will be exceptions now and then.
