I know I'm unbelievably late to the party but I finally bought a vp28 and man what a great preamp. Just tracked some acoustics with a schoeps mic and it sounds amazing, I should've gotten this years ago. It just sits in the tracks perfectly, a little hipass to get rid of the rumbling lows and done. The balance between defined but not obnoxious pick attack and body is wonderful. I'd used them in a studio before and they didn't really blow me away then, but in my room, with my mics and instruments through my converters, they're perfect. I'm in the middle of a huge 500 series preamp test and this one is definitely at or very near the top ! So happy!

Nice! I want to know the differences between the VP28 Platinums vs. the VP28 standard.

Love the CAPI preamps, not sure what else to add.
going through the GAR op amps will open up a world of different flavors

Nice! I want to know the differences between the VP28 Platinums vs. the VP28 standard. Haven't used the Platinum but all I can say is the VP28 definitely doesn't feel like a watered down version. It is solid. Right now I have it sitting next to quite a few 500 preamps: AMS 1073lb, Heritage 73jr, API 512c, Cartec, AML 1073, AML 1081, DAV 500, DON nV73, VP312 and a couple others I'm forgetting. And the VP28 might be my favorite. I think I'll end up keeping the VP28 and the DON.

I have the DON with EQ and am thinking of possibly getting some more DONs, AML or VP28 pres next. Thanks!

The AML is not as meaty as the Don or the AMS and has a little more bite to it. Having the Don and the VP28 feels like the best options, if the vp28 is too bright or if I need to fatten up a source I'll switch to the Don. However I wouldn't call the VP28 bright, it's present but doesn't have a ton of Airy High end info. It really sounds the way I would end up eqing things later on, but right off the bat. And the HPF is awesome. The Don and the VP28 can handle line signals too which is a bonus. I can't imagine you would be disappointed with the VP28. I've been experimenting with its saturation and it sounds great on DId Bass. Really gives the signal a little weight , a little bite, and really smooths out a performance. For acoustic instruments I've liked using it wide open, the saturation didn't seem to fit for my tastes. I did not like the AML ez1081 very much, I would pass on that one.

Thank you very much. That gives me a good feeling of what to do next. I have been loving the VP28 samples I heard so far. And the DON is the pre I use most often right now. Very flexible regarding the saturation possibilities and I like the EQ a lot too, also in line mode. So, I like your reasoning. Cheers!

I'm still using 4 of the original run (Silver faceplate with plain black print) of 312's from CAPI and 4 of the VP25's (later run with colors). They sound very similar to each other, but sound very different and aggressive compared to other preamps. I can't imagine not using them and if I had to choose a preamp to use forever, I'd choose the CAPI 312.

CAPI 312 is my bucket list preamp as well, desert island. Mine have Cinemag CMMI8PCA input transformers. Favored op amps are 2520 for general use, and GAR AM10 for "money vocal channel."

Next I think I’m gonna try the 526! The little I’ve heard sounds great Great comp Do you use it for tracking or mixing? I'm mostly looking for some subtle peak control for tracking bass, acoustics and vocals. I've tried a couple 500 series comps and haven't found anything I truly loved ( brute, igs one la)

Hi bricejchandler could you give any extra info on the Don Audio vs the AML "73" mic pres? Did you build both yourself? I am trying to choose between the two. It sounds like you said the Don Classic was closer to the "real" one. also I like that it has a real knob for the output level instead of a trim pot any comments on the ease of the builds or the quality of the products in general?

It sounds like you said the Don Classic was closer to the "real" one. also I like that it has a real knob for the output level instead of a trim pot any comments on the ease of the builds or the quality of the products in general? Hey! No didn't build any of them so don't know which one is easier to build... All the Nevish pres sounded a little different but all perfectly useable . I picked the Don because I felt it was the one that offered the most contrast compared to the VP28. The AML sounds a tad more open, and a little lighter on the bottom. The Don also has a much more convenient output button as you've mentioned. I'm getting these for my little home writing studio and I wanted a couple preamps that would give me options and I felt the Don and VP28 were the ones that overlapped the least out of the ones I liked. The AMS sounded fine too, closer to the DON probably but I didn't spend as much time with that one because it was a loaner and I decided pretty quickly against it not because it sounded bad but because it would be a nightmare to repair. I did compare the Don and the AML to the BAEs in a studio next door and I think I like the Don and AML over the BAEs for vocals at least. I always get great tracks at that studio, and the BAES sound great for bass, drums electric guitar but that low mid BAE bump always sounds a little odd to me on vocals but then anyway, I'm not a huge Neve guy for vocals. Lately I've been favoring cleaner tube preamps or api style pres for vocals.

I'm kind of torn between the Capi and the Anamod 660 right now. I also tried the api 525 which I absolutely loved on acoustics but didn't get working quite the way I wanted on vocals. I don't know if there is such a thing as too much color but out the compressors I've used the 525 is definitely one of the most colored.

Brice - What opamps and Transformers are you using in your VP28? Some say it’s not a huge difference between the opamps. I’m very curious about this

Bruce - What opamps and Transformers are you using in your VP28? Some say it’s not a huge difference between the opamps. I’m very curious about this 2520s and the basic transformer... I bought it used so didn't have a choice! But anyway I'm very happy as is, it sounds great, I might experiment a bit further down the road but right now I'm fine with the way it is.

I don't know if the world needs more VP28 samples as there are a ton of clips online but anyway here goes. Sorry about the lazy playing I was just noodling around for myself. ( and my acoustic guitar sounds a little hollow and phasey but that's not the preamp, it's been raining non stop for days here and this old 70s Takamine just gets really funny sounding when it's too humid...). Recording chain is schoeps CMC6 MK41 into the VP28 into Apogee Element Converters for the Takamine Acoustic and the Guitalele. Bass is an old 60s Framus into a BSS di into VP28. I then sent the track back out of Pro Tools into the VP28 pushed to get this really awesome compression and saturation, so you can hear how it sounds clean and pushed on bass. www.dropbox.com/sh/52gtjosed73vt5n/AAAujvTToPYX-NDFZDZ6EbKGa?dl=0
