I just watched Son Volt a couple of days ago at the Scoot Inn here in Austin. Excellent show.
I've seen them four times now. Each show has been great. The show on Wednesday night was fantastic.
I've always loved Jay Farrar's song writing. I also love the guitar tones on Son Volt records.
Has anyone here ever been involved in the recording of any Son Volt record?
I'd be interested to hear about how the guitars were recorded on any of their albums. Great guitar tones.

Did some early Wilco and Uncle Tupelo stuff as well as Slint etc. (Louisville scene bands)

Anodyne was one of the seminal Alt-Country records....
I wore that one out back in the day.

I saw them around 1995 in Bozeman, Montana when I was living in West Yellowstone.
Great show in a small club.... can't remember the name of the place though.

So you’re getting into my elderly territory. I saw them in Oxford, Ms (Ole Miss) in I think 1992 ish. It was kind of a hub for that genre at the time. There was a band called Blue Mountain that I have just incredible memories of...Laurie Stirratt was the bass player and she was the twin sister of John stirratt the bass player for Wilco. Anyway, love that stuff. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Mountain_(band)I grew up with Pat Sansone who has been the multi-instrumentalist guy in Wilco for years and years. Super nice guy and so talented. He had a band called Birdie that I loved a bunch. Now has a band outside of Wilco too called The Autumn Defense.

Trace is still one of my favorite albums. That’s one you want to listen to top-to-bottom.

I mastered a record he did a couple of years ago and it was sublime..(Max Hatt and Edda Glass) I remember Austin and Cedar Creek from this time period and played on some records there if memory serves. It was a great time to make music in Austin!

Trace is still one of my favorite albums. That’s one you want to listen to top-to-bottom. The way the captured the acoustic guitar on "10 Second News" is by far my favorite recording of that instrument. I used to do sound at a little dive bar/club and there was a pretty questionable jukebox, but it had that record. I played it a lot to accompany my post-shift drinking. Mostly just the acoustic tracks though. The more raucous stuff didn't grab me as much. I love those select few. Still a go to.

But I DO remember it was a hell of a show!!! I saw Son Volt at the High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy, CA (not that far from Petaluma) in 2006. I also have a similarly funny story about that show.... My Morning Jacket was the headliner for one of those nights of the festival on the main stage, but they also played a small, exclusive late night show (I think it was later that same night) for a much smaller crowd at like 1 AM in a barn located there on the fairgrounds. Well, if you've ever seen a MMJ show, their live show is fantastic in its own right, but they also make great use of lighting to enhance things. So there's a visual component to all of this as well. So in anticipation of that late night show, we all took a shit ton of mushrooms about an hour or so before MMJ was supposed to go on. So a matter of minutes before the show is about to start, the mushrooms kick in big time and I am in full on trip mode. And then, low and behold, who do I see standing a few feet away in the crowd that is beginning to gather? All of the members of Son Volt. Needless to say, I went over to try to strike up a conversation, but then complete and utter nonsense started coming out of my mouth. Mushrooms will do that.... I knew what I was trying to say, but it was not coming out correctly at all. To their credit, I think they tried to be accommodating of my apparent state of mind. To make it all worse, right about that time, MMJ comes on stage and I do an about face, mid-conversation, to go towards the stage, leaving the band completely hanging. It was definitely a "moth to a flame" sort of situation at that point. I'm not even sure what all I said, but I'm quite certain I left them basically saying, "WTF". That late night MMJ show still ranks as one of the best shows I've ever seen, period.

They played the Basement East on Thursday. Their music gets a little samey sounding for me, Trace was a great debut album and immediately likable but they never really seemed to evolve much beyond that. But, for some people, that’s a good thing. You can always count on Son Volt giving you a Son Volt record. But, most people seemed disinterested until they played “Drown” and “Windfall”.
Nashville is probably the strangest place to see music...everyone in the audience is a musician or in the business and it’s like they are more interested in the kind of guitars they are playing than actually listening to the music. I really noticed that when I saw Guided By Voice. I’m originally from Cincinnati and seeing them there it’s just debauchery and jumping up and down and singing along...but in Nashville it’s just a bunch of dudes with their arms crossed. Same with when I saw Sleater Kinney.
I really like Jay’s solo record Sebastopol.
