I’m guilty of being jaded too, it’s just hard to feel like you are having fun or enjoying a concert when everyone around you feels the same way.
But, I’m also not sure Son Volt is a standing room only band at this point in their career. My parents, who are in their early 60’s, love Son Volt, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle and all those bands but they won’t go to their shows if they can’t have a seat.

I would say that the crowd here in Austin at the Scoot Inn skewed a little older, but there were definitely young people there too. It's also an outdoor venue, so standing is the only option. There is no seating to speak of, but that didn't seem to deter potential attendees, as the place was packed.
