I've been using a BLA PM8 for a good while, I like what it does, I can hear a difference. Here's thing I want to be clear on, and make sure that I've not been shorting myself on, and if I am, I want some input on how to best set the levels of the unit and levels going in it.
My Ensemble is set at +4 for all 8 analog outputs going to the summing mixer. When I bought this BLA told me to crank the input levels on every channel of the mixer to full, the inputs all have transformers on them, I'm also running out of the transformer out. Am I saturating too much? I don't really want to go out of the transformer-less out, I like to keep it going out of the transformer output.
So, my question is, how should I calibrate the input levels of the unit? The original way I did this was ran a 1k tone at -0- from within PT, then monitored the return with the Waves Dorough plugin of the output of the PM8. Should I back off the input gain on the summing mixer and turn up the output more? Am I over saturating the inputs in a way that might be restricting me in some way? I originally calibrated this by doing what the people at BLA told me to do. Here's the deal, if I take the summing unit out I almost feel like there is more room, and the lows feel like they are actually more open and full. But, if I put the unit back in, some of that goes away, but the low end tightens and is more focused and I get a more natural feel.
If someone on here that knows about this kind of stuff could help me out about how to properly gain stage this thing I would be most gracious. Maybe give me a procedure that you use, summing or even console, it's basically the same thing, supposed to be anyhow. I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong, and want to try a different approach here.
Thanks!
