Got a great deal on a pair of UTC A-20 transformers. Help me decide what to build with them. Or partially build with them. Maybe I will just wire them to the patch bay.

Try them on the patchbay. They’d be fine for SS Pultec in/out. Or a more colorful Hardy 990 preamp.

So these turned out to just be TRW marked A-20s. EmRR was there any quality change from UTC to TRW. I have seen the TRW cans with the UTC still stamped into the top.

TRW bought UTC. There are rumors but no facts.

What did you end doing with them?

Nothing yet...
They are sitting with my other projects to complete. Funny enough I was just looking at them yesterday, thinking that I needed to wire them up to the patchbay and play around.

What’s the ratio on those, and what size are they? These are matching units, so have a couple different configurations. The A20's have more options then the A21 I just picked up. They are 2.5" tall and 2" square, roughly.

REAL Motown direct boxes! I have read there is some controversy and miss information out there about what a Motown DI consisted of. It seems that there were actually 2 different boxes being used, one for guitar and another for bass and this has caused confusion. Is this true Bob?

As far as I know, everything was UTC mike transformers reversed. We had a few boxes for placing across amplifier outputs that were used for keyboards but the main thing was the single "amp" with an Altec monitor speaker and a little monitor mixer. The inputs all came up in the patch bay. When I tried an A-20 with Bob Babbitt here in NashVegas, there was that "sound."

The A-20's I've seen referenced were on the output of an active DI or DI mixer. An A-20 is not a choice for a passive DI, it's 600:600. That would be an A-10, A-11, A-12, etc.

You're right, A-10!
