We recorded guitar first and then a quick vocal after adjusting mic stands. We intend to do another test recording soon - I am in the UK and my partners are in sunny Mallorca so I need to fly out again - its a good excuse to see some sun!

Here's an acoustic guitar short clip with the FAB 67 and an original Neumann U67. Sorry they are mp3's but max file size is 2mb for attachments on here. They are raw no eq.

That is sounding good. I feel like I can hear the difference in placement. Sounds promising! How much?

Listening on JBL708P's with Sub off Grace m905 D/A.
Yeah, the Neumann definitely has that "something" in the upper mids that I always get out of Neumann's, and is a bit more open way up top.
The Fab is close though. Would like to hear it on vox.

Yes, I’d enjoy hearing it on vocals too.
If I listened to only the Fab, I’d say it sounds really good, but next to the 67, it’s a different story. There’s some kind of life and energy a Neumann U67 has that instantly reminds me of the liveliness of Beatles recordings. Obviously the frequencies it emphasizes are just the right ones at just the right level.
Call it magic if you must, but it sure seems difficult to duplicate.
Good luck with this Chris.

Vocals are coming soon we promise - just a lot in the pipeline at the moment. We took the brave decision to post comparisons as we want to be honest with our microphone. We understand a Neumann is what it is and no other microphone whoever it's from is going to sound exactly the same. In fact we have the luxury of having 2 other U67's to compare and even they are slightly different from each other. We believe we have achieved a pretty close example using the best components available. During our testing phase we rejected 2 of the capsules from very prominent manufacturers, simply because we felt they were not up to the quality we wanted to achieve. Many thanks for all your comments so far.

I'm hearing more of the strings on the FAB, sounds closer and more "inside" the sound. The Neumann sounds more like its observing the sound at a distance for lack of better description. Sounds close mic'd. When up close on acoustic, IME moving the mic even as little as 1 inch or rotating the capsule a few degrees can really shape the tones drastically, so I imagine it would be hard to get a perfect match.
I like the FAB, seems like a good mic, sounds good!

We tried to be as fair as possible to the Neumann and as you can see by the photo the Neumann is on the bottom almost directly into the guitar with ours placed on top. The sound is also just the room no fx or eq. As you say it's hard to get a set up that's going to give you 100% accuracy.

I wonder if you took a DI of an acoustic guitar and pushed it out a speaker, and mic'd said speaker twice with the FAB and 67 in the exact same place, if that would be worth something.
I dunno. Just a hair brained idea. Its hard to test mic's that size side by side.

Could be a good idea but as you say could be tricky also. We are concentrating on getting some vocals up at the moment. We have some tracks nearly cleared for permission to use that have been recorded with our mic - a female artist who has just finished her album. Hopefully won't be too long.

Ok everyone here is the first proper sample of the FAB 67 microphone by a new artist called Alissa from Russia who recorded her album in Tramuntana Studios in Mallorca. It was recorded through a TAF 4312i preamp. Remember I've had to compress the short files to mp3 for upload here so not the best quality but I think you can hear the quality of the mic shine through. Alissa Hola.mp3 (1.99 MB) Alissa Para un amigo.mp3 (1.33 MB) You can check out her new album on Spotify or Youtube.

There is a lot of EQ and auto tune on that vocal which makes it hard to really hear the mic, but it sounds good non the less.

Hi Vincent, I checked with the studio owner and he said he didn't use auto tune on her vocal and just a small amount of bass eq. He said the reason he wanted to use our microphone was it just sat really well in the mix on her vocal with very little to do. We will get more samples up in due course of male vocal, piano, drums etc...

I see 3 mics in the pic for the guitar recording. Which is which from top to bottom. That may be most of the difference we are hearing. Better to have an artist duplicate a performance and record them one at a time there is a significant difference when moving a mic in those 3 spots on an acoustic.
