(shameless plug, but... I've been considering selling my API Box Console for a bit. Reach out if you're interested).
I absolutely love my API Box Console. It's been fascinating to realize how versatile it can be. I've run into a few weird and unique scenarios and was easily able to figure out a way to route things and make it work. There's some other quirky stuff about it, like having AUX Sends but no returns. Again, you can always patch back to the summing channels a few ways or brings them back via the Program Sum In. That was designed to integrate another summing mixer or expand things, but can work for a lot of scenarios. API really thought this through and made a lot of seemingly correct assumptions on how people like me are going to use a console like this. Once you get your patch bay up the way you want it, the sky's the limit.
I had visions of grandeur to buy more outboard gear and use the console to integrate everything. I was also considering buying a 4-8 channel tape machine, which this was perfect for. I started to move in that direction, got to a pretty good point and just realized after a few months that it was a pain and I didn't want to work like that. It was fun, but getting in the way of the creative side too much. That surprised me, but I'm a strong proponent of "stop thinking about it and just try it". To my credit, I gave it a good effort and learned a lot. Now, I'm to the point where although I still love the console, I'm not going to integrate a patch bay with it and probably never really use a lot of the features that make this console so appealing. It's a giant summing mixer with faders for me right now, so thats why I'm considering selling it and shifting gears.
I've got a lot of videos on the MillSounds YouTube channel of using the console and doing some cool comparisons. It's been fun, but there's a lot of money sitting on the table in front of me doing nothing at this point. That doesn't sit well with me, and I've made a habit of getting rid of a lot of stuff around here that doesn't get used enough. It's going to be a lot harder to let go of this one because it's a culmination of a lot of dreams and hard work in many ways, but I'm starting to feel better about it the more I think about how I could use the money from it in other ways and that will fit better for me right now.
