I thought those times where passed forever, but sigh - I was wrong.
A famous Actor (a neighbour) asked me to track his voice because otherwise he had to travel to another town and it just woulld be in the off. We talked with the movie producer and we did it, 3 hours work. No traveling no stress for the actor - just a few floors down- and he was in my studio.
I wrote the producer that I charge a small fee for it -70 bucks- becasue its my neighbour I wont charge the whole fee.
The producer acceptet becasue he did not write back, and wok went on.
Now the crazy stuff beginns. The Actor pays me and is pissed as hell.
Now both tell me they thought I would work for free.
I told them - as soon as you pay my rent I can work for you for free.
I try to be freindly and they try to fuck with me. I stoped offering my service 12 years ago and this small Job reminded me on why I stoped. The best was when the Actor told me that he would have used the I phone instead of paying for a full service.
Its a crazy world:
Rich Actor pissed becasue he needs to pay 70 bucks... LOL

That's just silly. Can't believe a real pro would expect that

Ask the actor if he was doing it for free? I can imagine the look on his face. I remember doing a couple of theater gigs where the actors were pissed that the tech staff was getting paid and the actors were pissed because while they felt they were a regional pay and they were not. It was very fun explaining that while they could very easily get people to act for free, they couldn’t get techs for free without whom they would be neither seen nor heard.

Oh, but think of the exposure! And you don't even have to go hiking in a blizzard wearing light clothing....

Who cares I bet he told his producer something like - that I am a friend and I can do this for free....
The moment I billed the producer they both jumped out of the window. I cant beleive that pros do so, but they did expect me working for ZERO.
I should have asked for 500 bucks.
Next time I book a studio musician I will try the same - if it works I piss my pants.

Not sure how world savvy this actor is but I generally don't hire anyone who is willing to work for free because the quality of the work is going to be reflected in what I paid for it.

It was your responsibility to tell him what you will be charging first, whether free or a small fee. I've had some famous people assume things were free that were way out of line, but they're so used to people giving them freebies, they don't think straight anymore.
At least it was only $70 and a few hours time. I was cheated out of $150,000 once, so I'm glad you got off lightly and moved on. Still, it was a no class move on the actors part.

I always ask if they expect a plumber or electrician to work for free when they hire them. I don't know what it is, but somehow it got worse how people expect to get musicians or sound engineers for free. "We can't pay you any money, but this is free promo for you! So it is a win-win situation!" LOL. It is ok somehow to hear something like this from a band of 16 year old schoolboys. There you can easily forgive them their naive attempts and enthusiasm about their own artistic work. But the fun ends if adult pro artists, venues etc. do this. Pretty ignorant and disrespectful ... but unfortunately pretty common, too.

($70 is not even enough as a "symbolic" payment or a sign of good will. To freak out about this as a customer or trying to get away without paying anything is insolent.)

We were approached about 10 months ago by an artist who wanted us to mix a track on spec (no charge) on the basis that if she liked our mix the best (from around six other mixes of the same song she was getting other studios to mix) our reward would be that would mix the entire album. (paid obviously) Initially we decided not to but we had a quiet patch so told her to send us the session files. We mixed the track using our Lexicon 480L and sent it to her but the next day we got our EMT140 up and running for the first time. We decided to remix the track using the EMT and sent that to her as option ‘B’. After not hearing anything for about six weeks we got an email from her telling us she wanted us to mix her album. Of course normally I wouldn’t do stuff for free but in this case we accepted the one off spec mix and it paid off but it’s not something I would want to make a habit of. Here’s the album on Bandcamp. madelineleman.bandcamp.com/album/nobodys-fool-full-album

This way she got 6 mixes for free, quite some man-hours. I would say: A job for Voxengo Beeper? If she liked it, she has to pay for the song to be usable... I don't do this. Such a situation happened last year, the band wanted me and a befriended engineer who does good work to do the album so they could choose ... not working for me. One of us works without payment in this constellation obviously. I was out. I don't like the idea of work without payment, and even less, that the unpaid engineer's work is dumped additionally, so he not only does not get money, he not even gets credit for his work. (which might be sometimes OK as a compensation or sign of good will if you do a mix for good friends or your own band etc. ...).
