Not sure its ever worth doing these things.. vintageking.com/spring-mix-contestBut some of the tracks are cool. Worth downloading to try play around mixing with something you might not normally do.

Anyone do this? Deadline was yesterday after they extended it.
I decided to throw a mix together very quickly of the You track.

Thanks for posting this. The prize looked nice so it should attract some talent, and the tracks were good quality. I’m kind of excited to hear what the winners do with it. I chose the Angels track and decided to try some of Scheps tips, headphone mixing in KRK (7506-ish) and tried to make it as bright and loud as possible. I think I boosted the vocals highs 30+ dB? Haha.. I wanted to do more automation, I planned to do it on Friday, but my friend stopped by and we had a long talk about life instead. I just did a quick headphone mastering and turned it in. I liked my mix at 10/11 LUFS, but I turned in @ 6 LUFS. The crush gave the kick an insane mass, which in my bright headphones seemed better than my references. Next day I heard it in the car.. very different experience there. Should have left it at 10 LUFS I think.

Wow 6 is crushed haha
Mine was at like 13. I didn't crush mine too much. But I do think I had the low end bumping too hard when the 808 comes in. Oh well. It's exciting so hopefully does something. I literally just spent like 5 hours on it haha I'd have like to do more fun things with effects and such but I think it's fine.
I'll share mine when I get back to the studio and have the file on hand.
I'd like to mix the others too. All decent tracks. Should be fun practice

Sounds really good over my macbook speakers! I'll take a listen in the car, let you know how the bass is working, but the top end sounds great, really nice.
Today I've been hanging with the mrs, I'll post my mixes when I get a chance

Your touch up sounds perfect in my wife’s car! I could sit back and relax to that for many years. The original sounded good too though. I’ll check in my car next and see how that goes. Here’s the one I turned in. My LUFS plugin metering might not be the best, I’m using TBloudness? It might be louder than I thought drive.google.com/open?id=1pCQayFbVRrvQuMMmvZHHIiHkHMcxVO88Earbuds and headphones seem to convey the bass I got from crushing it. I might try some post mastering and see if I can help it.

But I like dynamic range too much to do that to my own mix haha Would let the mastering guy do that. Yours is definitely loud! haha works in the headphone though. Will listen at the studio in a day or two. I found the interpretation of space pretty cool. Reverb on the 808 and voice super close. I think it could use even more space in parts to give it a bit more depth. But otherwise a very nice mix! I think this will be the next track I try out.

Ok so I checked out your mixes in my car. I'm happy to report that my car had the same results. I do think the touchups did something really nice for the track. When that bass comes in, just floating on a cloud, no pain, perfect and my mind is focused on the singer. I hope they will be doing at least a little mastering for their favorite submissions before making their decision. The rules said something about they have the right to modify the tracks however they want.
And while I've now learned how to mix entirely in headphones (yeah right LMAO)... it would be nice to have a new really good monitoring setup for the listeners who don't like music to be painful ... hahaha

Thanks man! But also...damn it! haha Wish I could have submitted the touched up one...oh well. Wasn't really hoping for anything anyways out of this other than some fun. Would be cool to at least get to the final round and maybe get direct feedback. That would be the best part. I think they planned on level matching them at least. Not sure about anything else. I listened to yours in the studio. The space is much more deep in the speakers than in my headphones..least that was my impression right now. The limiter is pumping! haha maybe too much for my taste but at the same time its kind of correct for the genre. Im not following the monitoring setup comment..you mean as in you don't have a good monitoring setup? Or..?? sorry..little confused. Anyways, Hopefully I can try the track you did soon.

Thanks for the feedback. That's good to know it at least didn't blow down the walls, lol. Yeah my monitoring is pretty barebones, since I'm working at home. 2 pairs of 1970's speakers (NS10/KEF105) and some KRK headphones. Also I have the cars, my macbook and phone to check the highs on. The KEF's are great, they extend really low. Supposedly consumer version of the old BBC monitor. They are sealed 3-way, nice for that vintage 3D with dynamics and depth. For modern loud stuff, they are a little tough to figure out. I've been thinking about getting more monitoring for a while.

The 8'' version of The Ones as they call them. Plus I have a 12'' sub. Really two but I haven't hooked up the other one. I have HD650s and m50x headphone here too. Im lucky at work.. At my house though I have pretty much nothing. AKG701s and M50x headphones. I have my old Mackie SR8 something monitors too but not hooked up. Don't really have a system at home anymore, working on getting HDX there. Not sure what monitors I'll go for, I might try the Focal Trio b6 or something like that. I love the SM9s but I don't think my room will work well with them. Definitely on my mind though as well.

Oh cool! I've been looking at those Genelecs for a while. I've heard good things, nice to hear what a mix sounds like on them.

Been using 1032s and 8030s and 8040s for a long time. These are nice. They have developed a lot of hiss just sitting here. But most wouldn't notice as i have 5 and am in a REALLY dead room. If you have any gear in the room at all you wouldn't notice.
