I've got 11 capi pres (4 28s, 4 26s and 3 312s). wanting to start in on a group of the AML 1081 or 1073. Anyone loving the newish 500 AML ez preamps?

Can't comment on the AML stuff. But should check out the Lola pre if you want something more the Neve flavor...not that the Lola is a Neve pre really, its loosely based on it. Cool preamps though.

I have the AML ez1073 in 500 series and it is KILLER! It routinely beats out real Neve 1073s especially when I’m looking for beefier bottom end. It will be a great compliment to your CAPI pres.

My wife bought me an ez1073-500 kit for Christmas. Haven’t put it through it’s paces yet, but it seems to be very nice. If it’s anything like the ez1073 1u with eq, which I also have, it should be excellent.

The 1081 brings out the best in my Coles 4038. It loves it, and the switchable impedance is extremely handy. I follow it with a Sound Skulptor 573 eq switched to the 1084 kind of curves and my ears are very happy.
Edit: has anyone else had the experience, though, of the (extremely minimal) AML calibration instructions to be very strange?

I use my aml 1073ez pre as a first choice more often than not, for the cost of the kit, totally worth it. Make sure you've got a reliable signal generator, i used a cable tester to calibrate. Fun fact, If you don't calibrate correctly and run it too hot, the laminate on the carnhill output transformer resonates and acts like a speaker! ....don't do that.

If I remember correctly, you can calibrate it pretty easily with a DAW signal generator and a voltmeter.

Instructions seem really well put together all around to me. I'll probably get a pair of 1081s for my passive summing mixer to have for different flavor.

Hey Terry, I have a pair of the aml ez1073’s, and like others have said, they’re badass. Really thick and weighty. Personally i like them better than the capi’s although ideally everyone should have both because they do different things.

Shouldn't this thread be in DIY? Carry on. Good discussion.
