Yes. My understanding is that he put it on TikTok (to that hilariously no-budget Red Dead Redemption 2 homemade music video) and just tagged it with (among several other tags) #country. As far as I can tell from what I've read, there was no intentional thought of, "hey, you know what, maybe I could find someone to promote this to country stations." Shit, if you've ever seen anyone play RDD (or seen a clip of it...) this song is a pretty funny soundtrack. While I don't personally like the song at all, and I clearly don't share the taste of the author to this article, here's an interesting read on the situation from The Ringer: “Old Town Road” Isn’t Country or Rap or Even Internet—It’s Pure Bliss

Also interesting, this is now the first number 1 for Nine Inch Nails. genius.com/amp/a/how-lil-nas-xs-old-town-road-landed-nine-inch-nails-their-first-no-1-hit-on-the-billboard-hot-100

FWIW, I like all you guys, in a forum kind of way, but I thought Ward’s comments were unnecessary. It’s just music, and pretty interesting music at that. I go with my gut and on first listen, Old Town Road was a heck of a lot more engaging to me than, say, the new Luke Bryan “Knockin Boots,” for example. I prefer Bakersfield country above all else, but I’d rather listen to OTR than KB, which sounds to me like it was just phoned in. Plus, now I can’t get that damn hook out of my head. 😳 I guess I’ll have to listen to some Beatles. 😎

Good for him.

I personally found it pretty funny, no idea on 'intent'. The video made it funnier.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the kid is just having fun, being young, making music, goofing off. Nothing wrong with that.
If it's not on the country charts who cares.
The majority of people on the country charts are making music to make money, especially the country charts...LOL

You just confirmed my argument. Nowhere does he say it’s a parody. The word is not in that article. Also - this quote from him “The song is country trap. It’s not one, it’s not the other. It’s both. It should be on both.”

So you think this should be on the Country Music Chart. Why do we have genres?

That’s totally fine...but to claim racism because a non-country song isn’t on the country charts is just hilarious. Next thing you know we will have transgender male wrestlers winning female state titles. Oh wait. And I don’t really give two shits. I was joking when I said I was “offended”...but that seems to be the reaction everyone else would say if the tables were turned.

So you think this should be on the Country Music Chart. Why do we have genres? >Why do we have genres? Good point. Segregating music by genre IMO has been just about the worst thing to happen to pop music in the last 60 years. If "Old Town Road" climbed the Country chart, it just means it was good enough to do so. Especially after Billy Ray Cyrus got involved. I didn't mind when Ray Charles did Country. As far as what Country is or should be, you've got a point also. See also, what is R&B today? I could wish it was what it was in the 1960's instead of what it is today.

Here's another Country #1 that's about as country as OTR. This one didn't get booted off the charts though...
How about all these other country hits...

I hate to tell all you old guys here that I had a sold out Chris Lane show tonight with 1200 young people (85% females) and they were rocking the Town Road song during change over and the crowd was going nuts. Not a single person there cared what all of us old men thought here on RG. It was funny to see in relation to this thread. The market dictates...

All week it's been the #1 song on the top 4 at 4 on a local station.
