Ive never tried or played flatwounds however I dig the sound. Anyone have any opinions? If one bass with flats would it be P, J, or PJ?

I've only used flats on bass the last 20 years, usually Jazz or Jazz style. I've tried a few, some I hated, some I loved, some are very "meh". I used the D'Addario Chromes for years as that was all that was easily available to me, and liked them. Then after a decade I did my big spend up try-a-lot and settled on LaBella 0760M, the really fat ones. As I don't play bass that often, I find them a little too thick/hard to handle, and so am thinking of trying the same strings but in a lighter gauge. They feel very similar to the D'Addarios, but have a much more thumpy rolled off sound. The D'Addarios sound kinda more metallic/bell like which I don't like as much. The Pyramids I tried felt horrible and the G string broke very quickly, never again. The Thomastik Infelds were HIDEOUSLY low tension, felt like rubber bands, I hated them, and the surface of the different strings (E A vs D G) felt quite different. So really you need to try a few. When I get around to it, or if I buy a new bass, I'll put lighter gauge LaBella's on it.

I have LaBellas on a Rickenbacker and Rotosound 77's on a P. I love them both but as those basses are so different it's hard to directly compare but I'd say the Rotosounds seem brighter and sustain a bit more. The Rotosounds sound terrible at first, really clangy for the first month or so, I like the way then sound now though the G sounds a touch dead compared to the others. I've been wanting to try the TI's but like others said I'm not sure how I'll like the low tension. I was given a pair of Ernie Ball Cobalts that I have yet to try. In general I like all flatwounds more than rounds on basses, especially when palm muting.

I’m not a gigging bass player, but my short-scale J-bass clone sounds a lot better with GHS Precision flatwounds on it. It’s also more forgiving of my amateur technique.

I like flats on any kind of bass, but I still prefer rounds for more punkish style rock. Flats can be much easier on your fingers.
I have D'Addario Chromes on my custom built short scale jazz and I like them. I do have a set of short scale D'Addario half rounds that I'm wanting to try, but haven't made the switch yet.
On my P-bass I switch between D'Addario nickel rounds and Ken Smith Compressors, which are these awesome sounding pressurewound strings. That's sort of a hybrid that has the feel of the flats but maybe isn't quite as dark sounding.
Was not into the Rotosound 77s, which I'm not a picky player by any means.

I think there is a Labella flat that is considered very good... "Deep Talkin' Bass" (there is a "Gold" series version too)

Flats on my Rick, rounds on most others. My humbucker Tele is so dark and fundamental-centric it kinda requires rounds, it's the only one I wouldn't put flats on.

I’m working with a funk band primarily influenced by p funk, but also zeppelin. The bassist has a stingray, and sounds good, but not vintage enough to me. Should I try flatwounds on stingray?

I use to only run flats on my fretless, until last year. I am using rotosound 77's on the TR4-B and love it. I don't miss the rounds at all. It's also not as big of a shock to the fingers switching back and forth from fretless to fretted now.

What are people's thoughts regarding strings on a hollow-body Bass, specifically a Hofner?

What are people's thoughts regarding strings on a hollow-body Bass, specifically a Hofner? Flats are mandatory, of course!

Sounds like it tames those springy highs I’m dealing with, and sounds way funkier! Thanks!

I love the EB Cobalt Flats on my Hamer CruiseBass. Play and feel like flats yet somehow they retain some brightness somewhere in the middle between trad flats and rounds. I think they sound great!

Thanks for sharing Ward. That’s the sound! Well, this is the guy who wrote the song . . . Janick but I have no idea who produced it or played bass on it. It would be nice to know. It sure sounds like a really good P Bass with flat wound Labellas on it, but I might be mistaken.
