You know...like for live performance playbacks? I'm helping a friend get his live laptop rig together. Any advice appreciated.

Nothing? I'm way behind in this area. Somebody point me in the right direction!

Noah,
This is a wide-ranging subject. There are lots of options available in all price ranges. Maybe we can establish some parameters. What is his budget? Is he an Apple or Windows user? What type of connection does he want/have? (USB, FW, T-Bolt (Apple)). The answers will help to open up the conversation, I think.

Thanks guys. I think he's a grand or less. He wants table top. He's kind of a DJ/EDM set up with real time vocal processing, running Ableton on a MacBook with a midi controller. He uses a duet but is not too happy. Feels like its unstable. It kicked on him in the middle of a song two nights ago. He's a preset type of guy. More about ease of use/stability than specs. I'm trying to get him to use better sounding gear but I don't think it matters all that much to him. He's a true talent and doing cool music and I wanna help him sound his best and help him build a great dependable rig. We've talked through lots of options and I've been trying to get him to build a little 4 space 19" rack of doom with some choice pieces in it but he really wants to stay small so he can kinda tour with a back pack kinda thing.

I was thinking that the Duet sounds like the right piece until you said that he has it and wants better.

If his Mac has Thunderbolt, perhaps the UAD Apollo Twin Solo would work.
