I've had this thing for a while, just never really used it...but being in PT11, it's the only 1176 style compressor I've got (excluding the BF one)...
Is this thing effed up? The gain staging is TOTALLY different from any of the other 1176 plugs I've used - and certainly different than the hardware I've used.

I think it's like a 5db boost when you plug it in. Gotta back it back down in the plug to get it going. I think it's a cool plug when you get the levels right though. I feel like it has a bit more body, while waves has more bite.
No waves John?

There's authenticity...and usefulness...and they're not, IMO/E, directly related.
IK's vintage stuff sounds really good...and is functionally very good at delivering the action that a built in DAW compressor (or EQ) can't. But, where I have first hand use of the hardware (like the 2a and 76)--they're no where near authentic. I actually preferred the IK 76 to the Waves...which says more than it does on the surface, because I don't like REAL 76s much.
I do think people get a little too hung up on whether a plug in is authentic to the hardware they've never used. It becomes more of a mental thing than anything--I see people all the time say the IK White is more authentic than the Waves which "isn't close"...when I push--never used a real one....they assume the IK is "more accurate" because it DOES often "sound better"...and wouldn't this classic piece of hardware sound better?
Anyway, IMO--the IK bundle is a cheap way to fill in a whole lot of the blanks of modern DAWs. Their program dependent LA and Fairchild and oversampling Pultec....that throaty OpTo (red one like a CL1b)...these are things no DAW I'm aware of has built in.

I like and use IK plugs all the time. & the Black 76 is one of my faves from them. Never tried matching plugins before though. Just pull them up and use them.
Really when these companies are specific modeling vintage units one can't really know how "authentic" they did unless actually comparing to the exact unit modeled.
I personally find both the IK 76 & the NI 76 more than useful in most of the types of applications one would expect them to be useful. I have no desire for any waves or UAD 1176 emulations as long as I have either if these. The next time I spend money on anything that does the 1176 thing will be on hardware. The plugins are all getting pretty good now.
I'm always confused as to why IK always seems unpopular. Almost every time I use their stuff I'm more than pleased. My waves SSL plugins haven't really seen the time of day since I got the IK White channel. I think I even prefer IKs British Channel to the Waves also. I have more plugins than I need really. Fabfilter, Waves, Plugin Alliance, Sound Toys, Native Instruments, and more. I don't consider the IK any lesser than the other stuff. To me some IK plugins are right up there with the best. I bet I use at least one IK plugin every session. Often the 76.

I've got CLA, but I don't want to pay the WUP or whatever it's called... I think you don't have to pay WUP, as long as you don't upgrade to another version or another computer. That said, I'm also not a fan of Waves' politics, smells like a rip-off. I bought the Renaissance bundle long time ago but I don't use it anymore after I bought a new computer and couldn't transfer it without paying WUP. I mainly used the RBass Bass Enhancer and I found other solutions for that. I really like the UAD 1176 collection and I'm eagerly awaiting my Proreplicas Rev. D

I'm sure John's bought a new computer recently--Waves has to love Apple.

It would cost me like $200 apiece to upgrade to any AAX's...screw that.

There is a $300 cap for WUP on your account. $300 would get all your Waves to AAX.
