I just want to thank Michael for his fine products and support of the community. I recall hearing him interviewed when he was starting up EA and I thought here is a guy to watch, the quality of his products is proof of that. So, Michael generously provided a full copy of Exponential Audio Pro Stereo Bundle + Excalibur. That is NIMBUS, R4 and Excalibur for the Production Expert raffle and I won it. This never happens to me: ever, so I am waiting for the please ignore our previous email email ! But, seriously Michael, thank you so much, that’s a great way to start off 2019. I have always wanted to learn about and utilize reverbs better, no excuses now, as I have one of the best !

Dropped r4 into my current session and I can certainly hear an improvement, more depth, clarity, texture, spaciousness and yet clearer and more refined: nice work !

Wow, that's great news kcat! I have so many reverbs, it's difficult to think on buying another. But, if I was starting again, I think I'd choose the Exponential. I liked how clean it sounded. Since Michael's here and is an expert on reverb, I'd be curious to know what he thinks about these tracks. I'd guess Pete Townsend's in a great studio with a great sound and probably a U67, but if there is any reverb on this, what kind do you think it might be?

This is my the benchmark vocal sound. It's Lyle Lovette on a black U67 with Massenberg custom preamps. There's C24 on the guitar that's getting some bled from the vocal and vice versa.
Michael, again, there's plenty of room sound here, but do you think there's a reverb put on this, and if so, any idea what type/setting/brand?

It's always hard to tell without knowing the room and the individual tracks. The clearest thing is the vocal, which sounds like a plate (or plate emulation) or possibly a small chamber. The real key comes from the sibilants in his voice. You can hear a very smooth 'shhhhh' after each sibilant, with a reverb time of a second or so. In the exposed intro I'm not sure if there's anything on the guitar (as I said, I don't know the room), but there could be a little reverb added as other instruments come in so as to back the guitar into the rest of the mix. As far as the other instruments go, could be anything. There aren't really any strong transients to deal with in the rest of the content, so the mix engineer would have a number of options.

I've been there, but it was a zillion years ago. The place has probably been remodeled a couple of times since then. As a rule of thumb (my rule anyway) all you want to do with a good room sound is to possibly extend it. So you'll have a fair amount of predelay and use settings that crossfade the natural sound and the reverb. For that sort of application, I use halls or chambers. I don't recall ever using a plate sound for that (but you could). The pedal steel is a whole other thing. I could probably get pretty close to that reverb with an R4, but I suspect it's a 480.

The room at Conway (is it "C" I believe? Whatever the main room is, I forget) has an ABSOLUTELY AMAZING reverb / ambience tail to it. It's quite a live room and recordings always seem to get infused with a "live" life to them. The room is the main thing for me there - along with the Conway experience - although the Neve 88R doesn't hurt either... I've had the good fortune to record there many times (films, TV, coral reefer band, etc.) and it's just always an amazing experience. There's just something about that room : www.conwayrecording.com/studioc/One of my fav recordings there was of a big band. I set up 2 M49's in the room - and they were amazing, along with Conway's classic ribbons for close mic-ing. Upon downbeat, I thought I'd been transported back to 1940. Don't know if the room has been sampled or not, but IMO, it would be a prime candidate. Surprisingly, it's smaller than it looks, but I think the magic is in the ceiling - it's height and diffusion... Recording there brings you back to the golden age, and you realize how far we've slipped in terms of great studio's and room design.

Great post drbill, thanks! It's really great to hear about great rooms like that which I may never get to. I've been lucky to be in a few classic rooms, as well as plenty of first class studios over the years. My first pro studio gig was at Bell Sound. I was standing right where Buddy Holly did his NY recordings I believe. It was like Abbey Road, where you looked up into a glass booth one flight above where the producer and engineer's were. My 2nd classic room was Electric Ladyland. From the look of it, that room should've sounded crappy, but the vibe was so good and the sound was excellent. I actually played on Jimi Hendrix's Marshall 100 for the lead guitar overdubs. My last classic room was Plaza Sound. That was the name of the studio on top of Radio City Music Hall that NBC built for Toscanini and the NBC Orchestra. I felt like an ant in the land of giants there. We didn't really use the sound in the room much, just set up in one small area. They had an API there at the time. I did a lot of recording at Unique Recording, the same place Steve Winwood did "Back in the Highlife", but it wasn't necessarily one of the great rooms, just great people running it. I wish I could find a better picture, but this was Plaza Sound around the time I was there.. You can't tell from the photo, but you could fit a 100 person orchestra in there and still have room.
