Hey Y'all,
I know a lot of guys here use these drum instruments (is that what you call them). Has anyone used this EZ Drummer Indie Folk EZX pack? Is there anything else out there that would be good for this type of music? I'm a drummer and haven't really experimented with this stuff before, but I don't have space at my place to record a kit, so I'm looking to branch out a bit for some production stuff that I'm working on. I currently have EZ drummer that I picked up a while back, but the sounds didn't really mesh with what I'm going for. Any tips, tricks, or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!
-Jesse

Hi Jesse, i actually use the indy kits quite alot in Ez, between them and the Classics im usually covered.
However I recently picked up Steven Slate Drums, there is also indy kits in SSD and for this particular song im working on it just fits better. The samples in Steven Slate drums sound damn good.
Cheers
Laurence

Also, do you guys use the pre-made midi grooves when doing this stuff, or create your own? Are these pre made midi grooves any good? The Tunetrack Indie Folk grooves are only $29. Could you load a groove into a session and tweak how you want?

Not much in the Indie grooves...I've gotten to where I'm just doing it myself. A really good responsive controller will really help with that. And just keep it simple. I love the Ludwig kit in this EZx...

What's a good price for these packs? Toontrack lists them for $79 and Audio deluxe has them for $60. Are there better deals than that? Should I wait on a sale?

Looks like this answers my question. This is the kit that I have... How about the pricing?

Yeah - I'm pretty positive you can trigger it with just about any electronic drumset...I've seen the EZ kits go for as low as $39...check ebay too.
The two I use a lot for more Eagles/Ryan Adams type stuff are The Indie Pack and The Classic. I know Chris Whitten (Chrisso) designed The Classic - maybe someone can invite him over. He joined initially, but for his own reasons has not participated. I would love to have him over, because I really love his playing and this pack...

I haven't tried it yet, all I have for drum programs is Battery 3 and the loops that are in Mixcraft 6. I have been wanting to fool around with MIDI between the DTX and the Boss DR-880 but haven't had the courage to try

I use an old Yamaha DTK10 kit when I'm recording a drummer. The DTX module sounds more than good enough for tracking with no latency, but I also record a midi track. Then I use the best sounds I can find from the various SSD and EZX libraries.
I'm not a drummer, so for myself I'll quickly go through the SSD, EZX, and Platinum Grooves midi libraries and find something that fits. Then I tweak it as needed. I've found the Platinum Grooves midi libraries to be the ones that usually have stuff closest to what I want.

I like the Toontrack grooves, they can be easily tweaked and are played well. I also love the Slate Drums, especially the Platinum kits, but I realized that his grooves are all quantized. I figured that out after I used them in a song and had to manually un-quantize it. Maybe Steven can chime in here?

Levon, I didn't mean the grooves with the Platinum SSD kits. I meant Platinum Samples, which is a midi grooves company, nothing to do with Slate. I mis-remembered the name Platinum Grooves instead of Platinum Samples, sorry about that. Here is their website: www.platinumsamples.com/index.php

A nice thing about Platinum Samples is that the grooves come in several formats for SSD4, EZDrummer, BFD2, Superior Drummer, Addictive Drums, etc.
The grooves from the individual companies, such as Toontrack, can be a real pain to set up to work with the SSD4 player. Fairly easy, but very time-consuming.

It seems like the slate stuff is all geared towards heavy rock rather than folk type stuff. Does slate have big old sounding kits like this indie folk pack?

I actually prefer some of the Grooves in ez drummer. Again, some of the Cris Witten grooves are great. I do find that the Slate grooves can be a bit too much for what I do. Need to check out platinum samples. Was looking for more grooves. Anyone know of some nice Country/Country Rock and some indie grooves?
One thing I did notice with SSD4 is, sometimes when I use ez grooves with SSD4 it misses either a tom or cymbal. Then I have to manually move it.

I only have the NY Avatar and the Music City kits for my Superior Drummer, and maybe one other beats pack, which sucked, so I don't use it . I've never gotten far with the potential it has. I know you can humanize and do all sorts of things within the program, but I do like the mixer a lot, since I mainly only use it in stereo, and rarely take all the drums out individually.
I haven't gotten any more kits because I got Logic X, and there are around 20 drum kits in their "Drummer" program. They look suspiciously similar to Superior Drummer, and a few sound really good. I have an Axiom Pro 61 keyboard, and I guess I could use the pads on there, but I think it would be much more fun if I could get one of those digital drum kits and have a drummer come and play on my tracks, I've never considered that, as they always seems like a toy to me, but I guess I've been wrong. If I could easily choose between Toontracks kits, Logic's kits and have a drummer play along, and do some corrections later, I'd be thrilled. The thing is, I don't want to kill lots of time learning yet one more technology that's not my first interest.
Have you ever considered using Logic? The drums you get with it would cost $1500 alone, and there's a gazillion other things that are cool. Their guitar amp sims sound as good as every one I've heard, with one exception. Among other things, their Flex Time works better than Waves Tune or Melodyne, and it's all included for $200, there's even a convolution reverb in there, and if your handy, there is a way to get Bricasti sample in there, but I don't know how.

I have been considering Logic on and off for a while. I used it as my main daw for a period a few years back, but switched back to Pro Tools. It seems like the features could be pretty handy, but I don't really want to be switching between platforms. I'm a PT guy and would rather just stick with it if possible.
