The VP28's are thick vintage and big with a tight bottom and powerful punch. The Heritage 73jr's are similar but a bigger fuller bottom and some more air on top giving that larger then life vintage deal. For comparison the Great River MP-2NV are like exactly in the middle but maybe can do a slightly cleaner presentation and are amazing on Male vocal. The Heritage are my favorite for Kick and Vocal the 28's own electric guitars and snare. I need to put them through their paces more, ill report when I do.

Has anyone tried the EQ he put out? The one with the two coils in it.... 553 maybe? I'm thinking that's my next build.

I have not.. I know its harder to build then the preamp and I don't have that much time to build although the kits are very good kits...

I want more Heiders, more VP28's and now I'm jonesing for the Heritage 1073 with EQ again...The problem is - i just don't need that many... Too many options can kind of paralyze me...Of course, if money wasn't an issue, I'd just collect this shit like bubble gum.

Different preamps for different jobs. That is why I have so many and they are so diverse in color and texture. I have been recording a much wider range of instruments and genres in the last 2 years, so I am happy to have options and not be stuck with a preamp that isn't fitting the bill just because it was my last one and all I had. I lived with that for a long time. Now with guys like Steiger, studios are able to expand their preamp choices and not break the bank. Modern studios need to be able to be more self sufficient. Building your own gear is certainly one way to get there. The good thing is the eventual repair can usually be handled by the studio as well and money saved to go back into the business.

Some may argue that one pre, one eq, and one compressor.... Say 16 heiders, 16 lc53's, 16 525's? set up as channel strips or a console, will yield a stronger sonic signature, than a bunch of different stuff. This consistency of gear character seems like a reasonable idea to me, and cottons to my experience.

this damn ez1073 demo the eq is very good sounding in the mids.... I got a pair of those, and a quartet of Jeff's LC53. Jeff's is so smooth, it's disturbing.

Not for me. I can't imagine using a big fat pre on upright bass and then using the same sounding preamp on a mandolin that would make it chesty and unclear sounding. Tube and fet for me in those situations.
