Guy I'm working with has a $129 SE...I've noticed it before, but that thing sounds freaking phenomenal. Just ordered one...I'll report back.

You should really take a look at that thread title again and think about the example you're setting as a mod...

I have one of those. I won it in a contest at The Purple Place. Based on what I'd been reading about it I had pretty high expectations, considering that it's a budget mic.
Sadly, I was disappointed. Specifically, like most "budget" LDCs from China it was voiced WAY too bright (Yeah, dog, it's really DETAILED) and did some nasty things to the sibilance area of my voice, which is the first thing I listen for in a vocal mic.
It's not the worst mic in that class I've heard by a long shot, but it's also nothing special IMO. My recommendation to people considering it (or any of its peers) is don't buy it, save your money, and get something that you want to keep for a long time. If you need a mic RIGHT NOW, go just a little higher and get a GOOD dynamic like a used M201.

At $129, the 3U Audio CM1's already have a good 'net rep. I might get a Teal, to mess around with. Of course, after hearing Tim C's capsule, in the Flea 12, gotta WAY moderate my expectations! Chris

Well, I know what I’m hearing with this guys’s voice. It sounds better than my $4000 mic...so I figured I’d give it a shot to see if he doesn’t just have a miracle one.

I'm curious who your singer "sounds sorta like", to get a better bead on this. I totally trust your judgement! Chris

Their is always that guy who works on that mic, but when you try it on others your just left scratching your head. Though I would love to see the dude at every GC. When you walk up and say “ Hi I’m looking for an SE X1, how much ?”😎

SE X1 is large diaphragm, X1a is medium diaphragm.
The X1a also has a red resonator disc (per Recording Hacks), to "contour" the frequency response. This might be a factor IMHO, on why this microphone was so impressive on your singer.
(best Leonard Nimoy/Spock voice) Fascinating...

Also there are some key differences, between the original X1 and the improved X1S (for one thing-self noise dropped to 9db vs. 16db). The Recording Hacks website, has further info. BTW John, as you may know, my "Which Country?" attempt at humor was...
What Glen Campbell said to CBS, when they said there was "too much Country", in his "Goodtime Hour" TV show pilot! Big Glen Campbell fan here BTW, wonderful singer/guitarist. Same for Jerry Reed, where we have to add songwriting too! Chris

Ok, you want great on a budget, try this, start at 24:00 in. Warren Heart tries a half dozen budget acoustic guitar mics. $150, and this sounds pro, no pun intended, Lewitt KC240 Pro. Attachments:
