Producer/Engineer extraordinaire Gary Paczosa cites the GML 8900 as a 'secret weapon' for vocals. Super transparent under high gain reduction. But...it's expensive. What are the alternatives?

I can't speak to the alternatives to the GML 8200, but I've always wondered about the term transparency when it comes to EQ. What exactly does it mean? When I boost 2.5K on my GML 8200 it brings focus to that frequency, more or less depending on the Q and the amount. So, what does transparency mean in this context? I'm talking compression (GML 8900). He's been using it for years and takes it with him wherever he goes (which can provide for some interesting hot tub conversations).

Software can be great for totally clean, I sometimes use TDR Kotelnikov for this (I'm a beta tester for them) although I haven't had the pleasure of pitting it against something like a GML. Some of the Roger Foote FCS stuff is supposed to be very clean at far less than GML prices, and for mixing you could get the pot vs. stepped switch version and save a bit more.

Any of the Audio Upgrades modded Aphex comps. Even without the audio upgrades mods. The 661 / 651 comps are transparent, and have fooled me SOOOOO many times while tracking. I look over and...crap, I'm compressing 15-20 dB and didn't hear it. Never used a GML so can't offer any comparison there, but the Aphex comps DO compress and are transparent.

Of the things I have and have used elsewhere enough to have a feel, the FCS stuff takes it. I haven't used a GML, and there are plenty of other things I haven't tried either. The PWM Cranesong and (I think) Fearn stuff should be very clean. The Safesound boxes should be, but they've been gone for awhile.

I’ll use a 8900 every once in awhile and I think an Aphex 651 will get you similar results. The 8900 is pretty amazing once it’s dialed in. I know they have been working on plug in for a really long time

The Aphex 651/661 comps are transparent but an Aphex Compellor which we use as our buss compressor can be literally invisible when used on vocals.

It is still you hear one of Jim’s, then you hear a very light vail and it seams just a tad laid back.

Never found my Audio Upgrades modded Aphex comps to be invisible, and never really found the compression they provided "desirable" on vocals. I had the same feeling about my Foote, DBX, and Inward Connections Brute. All nice comps and quite transparent while not invisible. But I never found I liked them on vocals. However I love my Urei 1178 and vintage La2a on vocals, guess i like it dirty...

I know it's a plugin, but DMG Compassion can be set to compress quite transparently. As can DMG Essence (which is far more than a de-esser).

Super Transparent under High Gain Reduction- InnerTube Audio Atomic Squeezebox Just as expensive Lot more of these can be found on the used market though, compared to an 8900 and you can haggle the seller... In my case, for a single channel. Which I will be doing at some point.

And also the Crane Song STC-8 and Trakker! I’ve only used the Trakker, but it can definitely be very transparent. Cheers, Geoff

I have a Foote P4DMS and a pair of Williams modded Aphex 651’s here. Fairly artifact free under high stress. I’ve always wanted to check out a Squeezebox, though. Came close to pulling the trigger a couple of times.

I find Expressors are more 'invisible' for general program material and vocals if set to 'Soft Knee' with the 651 and 'Auto' and 'Soft Knee' with the 661. They are not character pieces for sure. I tend to use our 651's mainly as peak limiters when tracking acoustic instruments. I set the threshold and ratio to avoid clipping the convertors and use fast attack and release times. However I find the Aphex Compellor extremely transparent for vocals and especially strummed acoustic guitar.
