Love this plug. Use it on every mix. Wouldnt wanna go without it. Great on both individual tracks and 2 buss. Key for 2 buss is to mix into it from the start.

Use it on every mix too. I started with Crane song Phoenix a few years ago, then Waves Cramer MPX, and now VTM. Prefer the latter. Haven't put it on indivudual tracks yet as I'm using Avid Heat which I find brilliant.

VTM user here also. I've got the Kramer Tape and J37 and they all have a place but VTM gets more use for me.
Great sale going on there right now.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I just don't find myself using this one nearly as much as the UAD Ampex. It seems to add lo-end, but I don't really hear much of a difference between the tape types or the 16 & 2 tracks. I find the UAD much more flexible.

Don't say I didn't warn you... You know what, I`m going to ask slate for another demo. No need to throw away a hun when it`s tough to come by.

Personally I'm holding out till U-He's Satin is PT ready. I'm a big fan of U-He stuff.
I'm sure the Slate stuff is great though from all the hype they get. I'm considering looking at it for $99. I just find myself more interested in Satin, because they've also modeled the noise reduction like DBX & Dolby. So accurately we can use Satin to encode or decode tape used on a real machine that uses those noise reduction methods. Not to mention getting to use them semi-inappropriately as a studio trick. Like folks used to do back in the day.

Alright, decided to bite the bullet. Johnkenn I appreciate your post but it also made me realize your using a tape sim as well.I`m not on the UAD platform . Slapped it on a troublesome lead vocal and it made it way easier to work with. It`s also on the 2 buss and it sounds very nice. $99 well spent imo. Anyone have any fave settings on the 2 buss...

I bought it on a client budget some time ago....it was all this frankly 80s sounding heavy guitar--you know Marshall on 10 with some humbucker loaded super strat kind of tones...so, they were the BASIS of the arrangements--and needed some really aggressive filtering, which CAN get unnatural...but, do it like we did it then--filter it on the way INTO the tape and what comes out the other side--tape kinda smooths over the filter resonances...anyway...I use it on occassion. It IS the "most realistic" I've used. Most tape emulations are distortion algos combined with limiters. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but THAT isn't really "the sound of tape"--that's more the sound of some really old tape machines' IO circuits being overdriven or people with some technical understanding that tape would limit and saturate made them...anyway...Fabrice did it well, IMO--because it actually "behaves" appropriately--from absurdly long faded memory, mind you. But, the kinda of issues that "pressing into the red" fixed, this fixes...and all the sort of "yuck factor" is there, too when comparing to clean on things that digital sounds BETTER at...
Anyway--interesting note on sample rate--working on client stuff at 44.1, the 30ips gets used a lot...because it's internally oversampling, and boosting the 16khz+ range while kind of dipping the more apparent treble--so making a combo of more open AND less harsh. At 88, I rarely touch the 30ips mode. 15ips is significnatly more linear up and down....and since the capture was already linear up and down....well...
I rarely use the G9. You do need to adjust the bass to -1.5 or so if you want it nearly linear, IME...somewhere between -1 and -2, depending on the track and speed emu. Noise off. Wow/Flutter up near 50...it's a nice plug. Glad I have it in the toolbox. Same time...not really something I pull out that regularly.

So how many instances in a mx and how is the hiss? I have 7-10 and the hiss is horrendous.

Speaking of the Noise...I can't get it to turn off altogether...am I missing something? On VTM? (thought you used UAD). Push the red button and a menu will appear.

I have a $50 Slate coupon, so I was tempted, but I had it for a while, and wasn't impressed. It just didn't sound like tape to me, and I've used Studers plenty of times. Also, it was glitchy then, so Slate kindly exchanged it for FG-X for me, and that was OK, but after using it for a while, I found it a bit harsh. Their VBC is excellent.
The UAD Ampex is the deal. Many folks have begun using the UAD Studer in the 2 bus, saying it's even better there than the Ampex there, and the Ampex is awesome. I don't have an extra $300 at the moment, so it'll have to wait. I'm still tempted to try it again for $50, but I also have a Waves Kramer tape sim sitting around and I've used it only once. Perhaps I should demo the Slate VTR and compare to the Kramer Studer.

Yeah - I've switched the hiss off thingy...but it only works when it's not playing, right? Wish you could just turn it off completely.

I haven't looked closely at it. John, are you saying you an dial back the hiss? That's one of the things I love about the Ampex. I don't like tape hiss simulation. Usually, I turn it off, but on occasion have let a little in if it suits the track. If the Slate VYM doesn't offer that option, I doubt I'd want it.

There's a slider there, too, JK. Right next to the flutter level....slide it all the way to the left.

There's a hiss level slider, as well as an auto-mute, which turns off the hiss when there's no audio playing.

Has anyone determined if sliding the hiss down turned all the way kills the effectiveness? Automute doesn't do anything for me. I have hiss on standstill.
