I was driving with my wife and kids and they were listening to the soundtrack for The Greatest Showman. My wife had it on her phone, and they were blasting it in the car and singing along for about 30 minutes while I drove and tried to block it out. This was different, my wife and kids never listen this loud, roughly a comfortable mixing volume. Ok.. so here's where it gets weird.
We stop at a store and get back in the car. My wife's phone connects to the car and the song starts playing and I'm driving again.
Then my 9 year old daughter says "What's wrong with the music? Why does it sound so bad?!"
Then my wife, who has NEVER complained about sound quality in her life says "Yeah Chris, why does it sound so bad?"
Me.. I'm in shock. What did you just ask me??? 10 years of me forced to listen to streaming garbage on garbage speakers and NOW you ask me this?
Here's where it gets unbelievable. Before I could even listen close and begin to answer, my daughter.. who is 9 years old btw.. and only knows IPad speaker sound.. says in a bratty disgusted voice.. "Are you listening on YOUTUBE?"...
And before I could digest what my daughter just said, my wife opens her phone to find, yes.. YES. she was somehow streaming a YouTube video for the song instead of iTunes. And the highs were flat and 2D, the hi hat and everything, just no depth to the sound, dynamic range sounded crappy.
So my wife opens her iTunes and puts the same song on and the mix is immediately more Hifi.. hi hat is a discrete thing, backing tracks are placed in proper areas, dynamic range is improved and they go back to listening loud and singing.
Now the crazy thing isn't that there's a difference. The crazy thing is that my kid heard it.. even crazier is that MY WIFE HEARD IT! I just don't know what to think anymore.
