So my singer keeps surprising me by belting out these great lines and the pre clips . . . and . . . he can't recreate what he did. I don't really want a full rack comp. I'd rather just stick a 500 series card in. I see there is an RNC-500 for under 300 but why is it more expensive without power? Any other $300 comps for 500 series that just save vocal takes and don't hurt the session? Anyone tried the RNC-500? Ya I see that WA-76 ad. Sorry. Don't have the funds or the real estate Mr. Warm.

I'll save you some money, split the mic signal into two preamps. Problem solved.

Aren't used RNC's like $150? Or less. Why not just turn the pre down a couple notches before recording?

yeah - turn the pre down to where he can't crap it out at all. Then record at that level. Turn him up in the phones...If you still don't have enough gain in the phones, buy a little headphone amp.

Easy, aphex 651 with Jim Williams mod, cost about $300 total, and its the most transparent tracking compressor EVER! IMO 8) (hard for me to say IMO cause I love em so much man!)

I doubt preamp clipping is the problem. If it IS...the pad on the mic (or different mic) is the only option. Limiter won't help. Generally, speaking the mic will clip before the preamp...and the converter will clip before either...
The advice above is good--turn the preamp down. Have him scream...where that yelling is peaking at between -10dbfs and -5dbfs at the converter (assuming that's briefly near the top of that range)...role with that...one ear off solves his ability to hear himself.
If the clipping sound happens WITHOUT going in the ballpark of digital 0 ....turn the pad on the mic...or hand him a dynamic. No compressor will help--it comes AFTER the preamp-the only gain alteration prior to the preamp is the mic's pad...if that's where the clipping happens--I'm still really betting you're clipping the converter (hitting digital 0). That's silly easy to do....

Hands down either a aphex 651 or 661... They're completely invisible. If the level is so hot as to clip the pre, chances are good that about any compressor applied thereafter is likely to break up as well. That said, I'm a huge proponent of tracking vocals through a compressor(properly gain staged). I feel like I can print a much better signal to storage with a lower signal to noise ratio with a comp. An Art Pro VLA is a compressor on the cheap that doesn't suck. I've got one in here and it's very usable. And I do use it. Think I paid 100 bucks or something for it used at GC.

I apologize. It's the converter clipping not the pre. That's why I want a comp between the pre hand the converter. He's just not a trained studio singer and is extremely dynamic. I'll look into some of these options. I know turning it down seems like an easy solution, but I track super low as it is. He just belts it out of no where sometimes and I need to stop the clipping. Thanks for the input.

If you really need a compressor on the cheap for whack crazy dynamics...it will need to be VCA, I think. DBX or knock off type design. A ProVLA won't catch anything quickly. That's actually what I LOVED about it--I could cream some modeler guitar track someone would send and it had a way of letting the pick attacks right through and kind of bringing the weirdly digital track to life...I'd really say....RNC...? If you can deal with the unbalanced level mismatching...I seem to remember that caused me enough PIA I lost it...but, it sounded like a pretty nice VCA for vocals. Certainly capable of flatlining a vocal...

Another vote for the RNC. Hard to beat for the money (especially when bought used).
Also buying used you know you can easily resell for what you paid down the road, should you decide.
That said although I personally haven't used the Aphex units I've read countless experienced pros mention how useful they are. Read plenty of glowing reviews many more that refer to them as work horse reliable and useful. Don't think I've read anyone hating them. Never thought of as some kind of sexy colour box. Always kind of referred to as a very useful quite transparent sounding thing. If I didn't already have an RNC kicking around over here I'd surely have picked up one of the Aphex by now.
I might still one day to try out but there's other things I want/need more first.

I'm a compress after tracking guy, I only slightly limit if someone has Wiley Dynamic tendencies, I've got 5 aphex 651's w/ Jw mods, I want 3 more, so if anyone gets one and doesn't like it for some reason, hit me up and I'll buy it from u. It is amazingly transparent and the parameter control is unmatched IMV. I can't recommend one enough, also RGO's newest resident gold record Recording engineer dandeurloo uses them, maybe he'll chime in on it?
