So I received my Ross martin ADC and NOS McOne monitor controller today Basically my setup is Ross Martin ADC duties, Dangerous source DAC duties, McOne for monitoring and Mr816 just for I/O. Mr816 is great for direct monitoring and onboard DSP(Rev-x) while tracking.
Now the problem is as soon as I connect the Ross Martin ADC through Spdif( coax or optical) I loose direct monitoring in Cubase. Also cant use Rev-x while tracking. been struggling with this now for hours. Not sure if anyone is using a Mr816. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. This is doing my head in

You can't do it....Apparently Steiny in their ultimate wisdom did some major odd (IMO) cost cutting things with the digital IO...you can't use the SPDIF and all 8 channels of ADAT....only 8 total between the two...and yes--I took it off my list because you couldn't direct monitor off the digital ins...which, I'm ALWAYS going to be using the digital ins for tracking on an interface with preamps on all the analog... A real bummer. This means the DSP and direct monitoring is something of the past. Haven't tried to to monitor with low latency. Guess I'll have to give it a try. Or look at another cheap alternative
Thanks Pop

Little advice? I see you shopping for a new interfaces...and I'm certainly not gonna talk you out of it...but, there are alternatives.
Option one $10-15....Y cable from the preamp--one to the Ross Martin for the signal you record....a second to an analog in of the 816 to monitor and listen to reverb in the cue. BTW--this Y cable is really needed to experience the difference or not that the ADC makes for you, TOO. And will be needed in the next suggestion:
Option 2: $50-150 (?) cheap analog mixer. Used channels out....who cares--as long as it's got a solid STEREO input...and a couple mono...you're a Y cable or a couple away from ACTUAL latency free cue mixing.
Anyway--the first is a simple workaround...cheap...not much to configure...you may lose some of the Cubase integration due to the input you want to HEAR not being the one you're recording, but worst case--record BOTH and chuck one. The second will make your caring about a cue latency and such a thing of the past for as long as it functions. It's the way I've gone...I want to screw around with tracking on my (silent) MBAir...and maybe my iPad (w Auria)...$50 later on craigslist, I've got a USB box with SPDIF in and out. How is the cue mixing? Don't care--I have a little analog rack mixer for that.
Just point out that if recording is something you're gonna be doing...and especially if you already own external mic preamps...ADA...add a cheap little mixer and own the function. I've posted before about how you can monitor with a software reverb...that applies in either case you pick (hardware digital cue or analog)...so, that part should be a non issue in the decision.

Lolo, I have had trouble getting signal to SPDF. I want to connect my monitors that way as they have digital DSP. Is there a setting you can direct me to check to get SPDF output? Thanks.

Thanks Pop, will def look into those options. Will look into a Y cable today.
Not really in the market for a new interface, just looking at options. I can pretty much buy the motu 828 mk3 and sell the MR816 for the same price. But I dot wanna downgrade on conversion, as i also will use the AD/DA on the box. Thats why i asked about the motu. Also the moto has more I/O. Can bypass the pre's etc...

Lolo, I have had trouble getting signal to SPDF. I want to connect my monitors that way as they have digital DSP. Is there a setting you can direct me to check to get SPDF output? Thanks. Heartfelt if i understand you correctly you'll need to configure this in the MR mixer. In settings select the option 1-6 adat, spdif coax. The set the output to spfif L and spdif R. also if your in cubase you'll need to select the right outputs

popmann the Y cable works like a dream. Now I can track with the onboard verb and direct monitor Why didn't I think of this Thanks alot for the help. You did save me some cash and time BUT im still pissed of with the Mr816. the fact that you loose 2 i/0 channels when using spdif, also another 2 for monitoring.almost left with no I/O. Some of the thats what I liked about some of the features of the motu and a small price. Will look at some options at a later stage. thanks again man

Glad to be of help.
I think the 828 is one of the most enduring designs for a reason.
