It's just a cheapo AT2020 but I've only used it three times in the year I've owned it, went to use it again and nothing, no hiss, no buzz, no nothing. Of course the warranty is up! It's nothing I want to put money into fixing but I was wondering if there's any interior parts I can check myself?
Thanks

Have you checked the phantom power on whatever preamp?
I've never had a mic just stop....I HAVE had a phantom power rail get weak enough to not turn certain mics on...YMMV. And now that interfaces are using software to switch phantom on and off...that seems like a more likely fail point than a properly stored mic. I mean--it's been in it's case?

Yes it's been in a case, I've never used Phantom power with it to begin with..

Try inserting the XLR connector a few times. Sometimes you get tarnish on cheap XLR pins. If you open it up, you might look for a loose cable or something.
EDIT.. Uhm.. It needs phantom. All condensers do unless they have their own power supply..

Huh! That could be it, but it worked before, unless I screwed it up by not using phantom power.

They don't work without phantom, and phantom won't hurt it. U probably unwittingly had the phantom on, and everything was fine.

AT2020 requires phantom power.
Check the cable you're using doesn't have a loose connection. While a dynamic will still work with ground and the hot or cold pin, all 3 are required to operate a condenser microphone.

Two possible things to check for that require a service technician:
1. Capacitor(s) have gone tits up.
2. Moisture somehow got into the microphone.

....but, turning on the phantom power is step one....no sound without it engaged is, well--exactly what should be expected.

There was a disconnected wire on the input, with a small sharp razor knife I skinned the wire to solder it back on and the wire itself kept breaking, so now it's too short!
It's time for a Bluebird!
