I've been really wrestling with this problem that I have lately.
I want to be able to track bands live off the floor and have 4 independent headphone mixes. I know I could install an RME card on my computer and that would work but my computer doesn't have slots for one and this would require a new computer purchase. The other thought being I could purchase an RME Fireface and use Firewire. I currently have an SSL Alphalink, I like it, I wouldn't be upset as long as the conversion I get is good.
I could probably get 1500 for the Alphalink and immediately get a Fireface for that kind of money. What do you guys think?

He uses Sonar on Windows FWIW.
