Probably a dumb question, but is there some consensus chair/stool out there that is comfortable and doesn't make noises? I've been using a stool for years to track guitar, but I'm always less comfortable playing on the stool than I am in a chair. I don't know why it has taken me 8 years to come around to realize, "Hey, I don't like this..." lol
Anyway, I might retire the stool.

I have a few options:
- an old medical exam stool in excellent condition. Think dental assistant. Whenever I see it, my mind goes there for some reason. - a $100 cloth-covered armless office desk chair from Office Max (uncomfortable after about 30 minutes) - a Hermann Miller Aeron, the Rolls Royce of office/task chairs. I leave the arms on when tracking guitar but they are removable. If I tracked more, they would come off and stay off. But then I'd need another for mixing and my day job. Expensive but totally worth it, the ergonomics of the design literally saves me from pain, leaving the suffering aspect to the mixing itself.

We have a couple of office chairs from which we have unbolted one or both arms.

I have 4 of those. If you need any more, I'd be willing to let one go for only $950.

I still like the office chairs, sans arms. the one with the 4-way adjustment is amazing.

I still like the office chairs, sans arms. the one with the 4-way adjustment is amazing. For comfort yes. The downside’s are any type of adjustment can mean some will take three times as much trying to get the chair right as they do playing ( we both are old enough to have lived through that session) and of course any adjustment means it should probably see some kind of preventative maintenance and a possible source of inconvenient noise.

I invested in a couple of seats this year and have no problem recommending either. The Herman Miller Aeron chair is as comfortable as it gets. The arm pads push back and out of the way and there's no trouble playing guitar in that chair. It's pricey but I'm glad I bought it. It feels like something that's going to last a very long time. I also grabbed a Sound Seat. It's also comfortable even though it took a few minutes to get used to the shape of the seat. It's around half the price of the Aeron and looks like studio chair as opposed to an office chair. It also comes in a wide variety of leather colors (I got bright red because everyone knows bright red helps you write the best songs) and you can order it with or without arms. If you order it without arms, they'll give you the option of drilling the bolt holes for the arms so you can add them later if you want.

I also agree with this : Herman Miller Aeron chair. They know how to build chairs. At first look it seems overpriced, but after a while you begin to realize how in depth they are as a company in building intelligently designed seating. I have two of these leather control room chairs from Jimmy Page's Mill Studio that I bought off of Craigslist for $9,000 each I would be willing to sell them for $5,000 a piece, payable only by Bitcoin.

According to George these are pretty pricey but with parts from Home Depot he reckons you can whip one up for around $100.
